Can anyone tell me the maximum i can safely run. At the moment it's runnin 0.6bar which i think is about 8psi. Without having to upgrade the intercooler, what is the highest level i can safely run.

Standard boost on an SR20DET is 9psi.
I have seen some SR's run up to 14psi with stock cooler etc but its not advisable. Id recommend a good boost controller and get it dynoed to see what the mixtures are like and at what point it begins to ping. That way you stay at a safe boost level.

I wouldn't really go past 10psi on the stock cooler, with an aftermarket cooler 14psi will be safe even with stock ecu.

what about boosts spikes.

using a turbo XS.
when set to 10psi..

it will spike to about 13psi especially on cold nights then drop down to a constant 10psi..

if set to 14psi i would imagine a spike to 16-17psi then drop down.
how safe would that be ??? :o

curious... i wanna wind up the boost on winter :D

regarding boost spike, keep in mind that boost is still controlled by your right foot. It should not spike unless the boost level fluctuates rapidly (ie. dropping it into 2nd hard, hitting boost in 1st). I'd advise less throttle to keep the boost lower if you really want to wind it to 14 on the bleed valve as I wouldn't want my boost spiking to 16-17 with standard turbo and cooler.

i've got FMIC and FULL zost.
i notice that it does spike when throttled hard.
with a slightly easier throttle it'll spike 1psi or so...

@ 10psi the car made 140kw@rw
now i'm runing 12psi and it feels much better.
i'll wind it up to 14psi when it gets colder..

white180sx,

also how do you drive the car? if you don't really thrash the crap out of it on a daily basis it should be alright with a slight spike as long as you don't hit full boost all the time. Does anybody know if there is a factory boost cut on the sr and when it comes into play?

naaa. i don't thrash the car at all.
it runs on 8psi all the time.

then occasionally i'll switch it up to 12psi....
when a coomy or a rexy is around. :D hehehe
i've seen it spike up to 15-16psi but i haven't hit the boost cut yet as it quickly drops to a constant boost of 12 psi... :D

just wondering do you guys have a fmic or still runnning stcok cooler.

With a 3" turbo back exhaust, hi-flow cat, pod filter and BOV what boost could i run without upgrading cooler. I have a a 94 model, blacktop SR20DET. Say with a boost controller could i run 8 psi on a regular basis, and occasionally crank it up to say 12 psi? Still with the stock cooler???

Yeh I got Exhaust, Aif Filter, 550 injectors,Z32 AFM, remapped ECU, and HKS EVC 3 was running .8 bar low, 1.12 bar high. Couple nights ago i felt really bored and wanted to time myself with my RSM on high boost...the next morning, a squealling noise came from around the turbo after it hit .5 bar. My advice, you better be safe than sorry n fit a FMIC before boosting!! As for the squealling, haven't had it check it out yet. Anyone there have any suggestions of what it could be??

nismo1, my guess is one of the turbo gaskets or the turbo itself.

Does it blow heaps of smoke now? If so, you've probably stuffed your turbo. If it's just screeching and losing power, check the gaskets.

Nah..no black smoke. the car is still boosting as normal. Is there any way of knowing its the gasket without removing the turbo? Hope its not as bad as i think!

I don't know how you can tell but I'm sure someone else will tell you. (Maybe one of those smoke leak tests?) It's a fairly common problem with silvias.
You have to remove the whole turbo + exhaust manifold. The gaskets are only about $40 each from nissan. Might as well replace both while your at it. Most of the cost is labour unless you can do it yourself as it's a bitch of a job.
