im looking for an air filter for my s13.

is there much difference between the brands or different types? does any type suit the silvia better than others??

do air filters for the silvia fit in right away or do connection pieces have to be made??

thanks

I assume you mean air filter as in a pod filter, and not the factory style one...
In that case there are heaps on the market, some paper element (like K&N), some oiled fabric (I think the Simota ones from Autobarn are this type - good value too), and some are oiled foam (O2 Rush, Unifilter, etc.)

The hard part to get is the adapter to connect up to the airflow sensor, because no one ever seems to keep them in stock.
You'd also want some kind of cold air intake pipe to get any real benefit from the filter change too.

go for the air box replacement type like a K&N the pod type filters are just a wank the 'rice boys' love because it looks 'cool'. all the pod filter will do is suck in hot air from the engine bay and you WILL actually LOSE power! :o

You can go all out and buy a kit type air filter for you car, go to any jap import parts place and see if they have any in stock (just jap, auto disposals, jap performance etc)

but dont buy cheap arse ones like from autoone????? its your choice. first thing rip of the factory stock box, get some flexible piping or build a partion and bolt on a k/n hks trust apex sard etc filter.

not in all cases, i mean, if you position it low and with some sort of ducting you will eliminate some negative boost.
if you pressure test the stock intake with a manometer youll see what improvements the position can have on flow.

theres no argument that the gains are small but gains are gains

It can be better to buy a cheap one ($40 - $60) and replace it a lot more often than the brand name ones which are essentially the same thing but cost 5 times as much...

hey hey ,

i was just using autoone as an example, hence the question marks!!!!! those simple filter tests in all car magazines show why.

Air filters only offer minimal gains.....but when used with an aftermarket exhaust and intercooler or chip they can provide some benifit. Oil style filters can be dirty and deposit alot of residew in your engine bay. Paper style filters can be good too, but if exposed to hot air for long periods of time the filter will start to warp.
Any aftermarket filter is an improvement.....most factory airboxes are very restrictive in design.

Well I was going to buy a K&N pleated cotton box filter for mine but was convinced to buy a 'KingDragon' which is essentially exactly the same. It is also pleated cotton (high flow washable etc) but it cost a little less.

They fit straight in, no mods required. Ferrari use KingDragon filters in all their production cars so I figure they can't be that bad. I run a stock CA18DE and I noticed a minor improvement. Breathes a little better. ;)

Most of the chaps over in the UK run either K&N, Blitz or Apexi pod filters. I think the Apexi gives the best overall filtration and flow. I have a K&N on my s14 and its a definate improvement over the standard panel.

I think the advantage of a POD filter in terms of flow is over the entire airbox assembly. The airbox is the restictive part, not the panel filter inside. Buying an aftermarket panel is a wate of monmey.

The proof? Dyno day I ran my airbox without the filter inside and gained a whole 0.2kw.

As for PODs, they definately outflow a factory airbox, but you need to make sure you give them cold air. I think everyone will agree on that.
