Post subject:  BP ULTIMATE no more till end of DECEMBER2005

Hi Guys,

Just some info for those who may not be aware.

I went to fill up on tight ass tuesday @ BP and i was advised by the
employee that they have run out of ultimate and there will be none till at least the end of DEC05.. apparently there is problems with the supply?
I'm not sure but could this possibly mean that we are feeling the strains of a dercreasing supply of fossil fuels. when at the moment petrol is at a good price???

BP defends delay in going public over fuel shortage

As reserves of premium unleaded fuel dry up in Western Australia, petrol
producer BP has defended its decision to delay telling motorists about
the problem.

BP supplies premium unleaded to more than 600 retailers state-wide but
has been unable to produce the fuel since a mechanical fault occurred at
its Kwinana refinery.

The breakdown occurred two weeks ago but BP only went public yesterday.

Company spokesman Peter Metcalfe says service stations are already
starting to run out.

"There's around about a dozen BP sites have run out completely and I
think in all honesty that situation is likely to grow," he said.

Mr Metcalfe has defended the time it took to alert the motoring public.

He says the company was not sure at first whether it had an issue and,
once the scale of the problem was realised, it tried unsuccessfully to
source additional supplies from overseas.

Motorists who can are being urged to switch to regular unleaded until
supplies are restored - hopefully - by late this month.

The Motor Trade Association says the fuel shortage shows there is a need
to set up fuel reserves in Western Australia.

The executive director of the association, Peter Fitzpatrick, says the
Government should stockpile fuel to help deal with any future shortages.

"We are very exposed with one refinery where you can have it break down
or get some contamination, and I think that the Government, and I've
asked them to do it, to look at it before, should have a strategic
reserve set aside for just this sort of contingency," he said.

Went in to my local BP to fill up today and they had none. :(

Had to limp (had probably a few drops of petrol at most) to shell, which i really hate.

Fuck. My car's tuned for 98RON now as well.

Looks like I'll be trying out the new Shell Optimax Extreme 100RON fuel.

Dont forget that this fuel is 5% ethanol.
Caltex Vortex 98 is as good as BP ultimate if not better.

Optimax is better than the caltex stuff generally, though occasionally caltex gets a freak batch.

I'm going on what tuners have told me.

Ultimate is consistant and pretty good
Optimax is ok but every now and then you get a really good batch. Knock tends to be a little higher than ultimate in general (this i have experienced myself)
Gold is all over the shop (to the point you have no garantee that it wont ping if you've had a tune on 98 octane)

I'm getting really sick of tuesday to fill up.
MK's $1.16 on the matter...

The BP near me has no concept of tight arse tuesday and is at least 2-3cents more expensive than anything else every day of the week and I have no idea how the business stays afloat. Which is unfortunate because the BP is a much more consistantly better fuel than the shell. Car runs a lot better on it but I have noticed it running slightly richer (or I'm being a bogan and just dumping it more often because it revs easier...)

Shell, I've never had a problem with it and have been running my SR20DET mostly on Optimax for the last 5 1/2 years and its fairly abundant, well at least where I live it is. The cleaning bits in it are quite good if nothing else is very remarkable about it. I have also heard the horror stories of bad batches of optimax, however I've not. This might come down to some of the more shady servo owners or the cleanliness of their tanks.

Caltex, its getting to be fairly common and its also relatively cheap. I dunno whats in the shit but my car doesnt like it one bit so I've stopped putting it in her rather than get frustrated with it not revving and that was after throwing 3 tankloads through it over about a month and a half.
Caught a tankfull of Optimax instead and we're back to running fine.
