decided I will buy a better cat since I am going to the trouble of buying the CES pipe, just trying to work out which one would be the better of the two. Both are around low $430.

Get a Cat Converter from a Gen III V8, they have huge flow rates, and cost about $180 brand new, I got better power figures on my previous Mazda 626 from a GEN III V8 Cat than I did from a $520 Hi-flow converter.

Paying $520 for a cat is a rought!

The GEN3 cats are not overly good. Yes on an asthmatic NA car it may show some sort of gain, however on a turbo S20 it is passing more gas through the exhaust than the pipe on a single GEN3 bank. Remember the GEN3 has a duel system for the first half, so effectivly the cat is only flowing 3 cyl worth of NA gas flow.

The stock RB26 cat is a good peice of gear but honestly go with the magic cat over the two you have choosen.

The little information I can find on the Metal Cat doesn't add up. Take their advert for example... the claim an approximate 10% reduction going through the cat, then they say thats like going from 3" to 2.7" while .3" is 10% of 3" it certainly isn't 10% of the area.

They don't give a lot of information about the comparision Cat either other than leading brand. No part numbers to make sure they are comparing like for like.

Risking I can't find a website for Magic just obscure reference that people sell them but no real info on them.

I am going to be running LPG so I am not overly concerned about the Metal maybe not being as efficient as the ceramic as I expect the emissions to drop with LPG.

I am really just looking for max power potential at this point and drivability.

Spec: where did you find the price of $380 I can't see any prices on that website.

There was a 2nd hand Metal Cat [or was it Catco] in Justjap for around $200. It was there last week when I dropped by.

I've read that GTR\GTST cats are very good replacements for SR20's.

Think there's a sponsor on NS.com selling Metal Cat for $299 delivered. Yep, just checked, it's there.

I would never buy a second hand front pipe and cat (just me) I would only ever consider a Cat back if it was in really good nick and fit my purpose.

The problem there is that no GTSt will have an original cat as they are all swapped as part of the compliance and a local delivered gtr is now pushing 15yo so not a really good option. A genuine replacement from nissan will cost the same as a universal Catco anyway.

They would probably be fine for a mild upgrade but not really worthwhile when a regular old 3 inch cat costs about 250 installed.

Check these guys out...

http://www.smb.net.au/converters.htm

Catco 3" in 3" out 299 CFM

Carsound 3" in 3" out 299 CFM

Metallic substrate 3" in 3" out 408 CFM = 36% increase if flow rate

Metallic substrate 4" in 4" out 437 CFM = 46% increase in flow rate

I was thinking about getting a 4" in / out because of the better flow rates but figure it wont really gain anything since I am reducing back to 3" both end anyway.

I think I would like to go metal which ever one I use.

gun_200, catco are claiming around 700cfm flow figures for there new cats, its pretty useless comparison though, as none of them tell you what the pressure differential was on the tests.

and im pretty sure the comparison magic cat made was against a stock cat of the car they tested it on.

btw 182Go, have you been following the threads on SAU.com in regards to LPG conversions, and the australian company who has made some conversion kits which make close to the amount of power the car would on 98ron fuel ?

Can't say I have do you have a link to the article? The research I have done so far has indicated the same thing on injected LPG the beauty of LPG is the 105 RON which means MORE boost :D
