pinging is caused by ignition of the air/fuel mix in your cylinder before the spark of the spark plug. This causes temperature and pressure peaks that will melt your piston, crack your cylinder head, and drop one of your exhaust valves.

Pinging sounds like rocks being thrown around inside your engine. It will never happen at idle, may happen at part throttle, but is most likely to happen at full throttle. It is usually accompanied by a small amount of smoke out of the tailpipe, but don't rely on that.

Your engine can stand anywhere from less than one second to perhaps minute of pinging before it suffers permanent and serious damage, depending on conditions.

The hotter your engine is, the more likely your engine is to ping. The farther your timing is advanced, the more likely your engine is to ping. The higher your compression ratio is, the more likely your engine is to ping. The lower the octane of gas you use, the more likely your engine is to ping.
all relative to the type of engine etc.

Perhaps more correct would be to say that 'pinging' occurs when the fuel in the combustion chamber spontaneously ignites at different places around the chamber, instead of the central spark plug point, and these seperate wave fronts cause the fuel to burn in an erratic way, instead of a single smooth flame front as is meant to occur. These hot spots caused by spontaneous ignition can be hot enough to melt pistons etc.

Ditto to al the above. But just to add, Pinging occurs prior to it being heard also! Ive seen to many idiots whinde up the boost and stop only when they "hear" pinging. On a dyno, while being tuned and upping the boost, you will notice pinging before you here it!

And is it hard to hear?? I've never heard it before on the Mazda or in the 200, maybe I didn't wind the boost up far enough.

or sounds like 5 cent coins in a can... everytime I hear it, it makes me cringe, I can imagine the damage that is happening inside the engine when it happends.
