|
|
Hey All,
I have an SR20DET in my 200SX and have a set of HKS Cams in it.
The VCT is now not working properly and is making some lifter type noises at low RPM.
I have been told that I should remove the VCT as it is weak in the S14 series motor...
Any thoughts, comments or knowledge would be a great help!
Thanks,

you can just unplug the solenoid, but then you lose a lot of midrange torque, and may have problems with pinging.
To properly remove it you'd need to by an adjustable cam sprocket and get it set up correctly. _________________ The Engine Whisperer - fixer of things |

Would the VCT oil feed need blocking Andrew? _________________ I didn’t break it, I just modified the operational status...

Unplugging it effectively removes the oil feed _________________ Disclaimer: I actually DO know everything

I was asking more along the removing it and put on variable cam sprocket option. _________________ I didn’t break it, I just modified the operational status...

I don't get what you mean. If you unplug the VCT, no oil goes to the sprocket anymore. You can just unplug it and stick an adj intake sprocket on in the place of the VCT sprocket _________________ Disclaimer: I actually DO know everything

Andrew offered 2 options the first disconnecting the VCT, which as you point out would stop the oil flow. I was asking about the second option of removing the VCT which would require a differrent cam gear. I was on this option that I was asking about blocking the oil feed.
I figure if you remove the VCT unit and it is oil feed there was a good chance that the oil feed would need blocking off. _________________ I didn’t break it, I just modified the operational status...

Hey Andrew,
I used to be friends with Sneezy, I made his fibreglass dash piece for the screen in his 180SX...
Anyway thanks very much for your advice, going on from your answer it seems that I have a set of "Step 2 - 264 Degree Lift 12" Camshafts installed.
And going on advice from a mechanic he suggested the VCT issue, the only thing I just thought of was that if I unplug my VCT unit I still have the same lifter sound below 2,000 RPM.
Would you have any other suggestions as to what the noise may be?
Another person said I maybe be pinging? Is that possible at idle?
Would the VCT be cutting in and out due to the cams?
Any suggestions would be great!
Thanks,

ahh ok, with those cams you will generally kill the VTC actuator after a while, and it may make noise even with the solenoid unplugged.
I was running larger cams (270° 12.5mm lift) for quite a while without any problems though so it comes down to luck a little bit I think.
It won't be pinging, it's just that the VTC actuator gets worn and due to the extra load of the larger cams (and the matching heavier valve springs you'll have in there) it will rattle. Different oil may help, and it can also be caused by the timing chain tensioner not working properly, or even the chain rubbing on the top chain guide.
If you replace the VTC sprocket with an aftermarket one it will block the oil passage (actually the shorter, solid bolt you use to mount it blocks the oil passage) so there's nothing else needing to be done. _________________ The Engine Whisperer - fixer of things |

Hey Andrew,
Thanks again for your knowledge I will let you know how I go with it and post up a reply on how it goes...
Any suggestions other then Nengun for buying the Cam Spocket at a reasonable price?
Thanks Again,

I've never bought one so I'm not too sure about price from different people.
just having a quick look:
SpeedFreak sell them for $240.
Tweakit have them for $149 each. _________________ The Engine Whisperer - fixer of things |

you'd technically only need the intake one, but if you're going to get ditching the VTC it could be worth getting both and getting them tweaked for best performance. _________________ The Engine Whisperer - fixer of things |
