Hey guys, I'm looking for a bit of knowledge about the o2 sensor (oxygen sensor - I know that you all know what is called... just adding this little bit so if anybody else is trolling then they can find this topic easier...).

I took my na s13 to get it's cat changed... and they ended up also ended up changing the muffler (due to other reasons) when I got back to him, he showed me my cat, which was completely hollow (and I am serious when i say i had nothing to do with it... i got the car as it was... without any other knowledge) and what was apparently a temperature sensor (as he had apparently fitted a metal cat. He told me to find the replacement and he'd install it.

Now question is, after trolling the web... i was led to believe that this is another o2 sensor, and that the s13 and onward actually measure the exhaust entering and exiting the system. Are these findings correct... or is it an actual temperature sensor? I wanted to make sure before i went an bought another one, being as i am now broke cause of the car as i had to get the brakes redone.

Final question. Is the second sensor actually located in the cat? or did someone else just do another dodgy on my car?

yes it is a temp sensor, and is not necessary.

All it does is turn on the dash warning light for cat temperature, which is / was an emissions requirement in some countries - to let you know that the cat is overheating.

if the light's on it's because you've shorted out the wires.

Tidy them up, or unlug the cable under the passenger seat (and carpet) and the light should go off (or remove the bulb from the cluster, or cut the wire from the ECU)

well it's not connected. We couldn't remove the sensor from the old cat, so we had to snip the wire and move on, so it's not there. Plus i got a metal cat installed, which I'm not sure came with a sensor. So any ideas where i could get one?

ive got a sensor with the plug attached- $10 but if you dont have hole for it to go into then you need to get a bung welded in.

when you snipped the wire you will have shorted the two wires inside.

If you tidy them up and separate them, or unplug the cable under the carpet the light should go off.
