My HSC has finished, and my dad said i can buy an old car to modify. As the topic suggests, i wanna modify an old school 260z :D

Has anybody here owned one? Modified one?

I plan to make this car a drift car, i'm really keen on this form of motorsport, so if i bash the car up, i really have nothing to lose...

Does anyone here recommend a place for drift set-ups?

I also understand that the 260z is a carby... i hear all the time that 280zx engines are swapped into 260's...is this a worthwhile mod?

Thankyou.

I used to have one, and it was a damn fun car.

The problem with them is that they tend to be full of rust.
It costs a lot to get one in decent condition, and also costs a lot to modify and set up well.

The 260Z carbies are generally worn out and un tuneable.
I replaced mine with 240Z carbies, which work a lot better.
Genuine SUs would be nice, but harder and more expensive to get.

If I find another one in reasonable condition I want to put an SR20 in it :)

bash up a 260 zed trying to be Takumi, and we'll cut your nuts off.

go grab a cheap CA18DET silvia, and destroy that instead. parts are a LOT easier to get,and the car will cost the same to buy initially.
a silvia is also a lot easier to set up than a zed for the kind of thing you have in mind.

if you want a project drifter, get an 86 (4ac - cheap) and put a ge in.

*L* try finding a sprinter in decent condition for a decent price, and then try and mod it for less than a silvia costs to do the same to.

I've been there, and done that, more than once. I've had four sprinters myself, and unless you're very devoted, don't bother with them, that's my advice to all of you.
to do one up properly(twin cam swap,LSD,brakes, and proper suspension at least) you'll have zero change from $10k,and the car won't cut better than a 16sec quarter,or better 1' 16" laps of wakefield park.
basically, what a near stock silvia can do.

silvias are the performance bargain of the century. you'll be VERY hard pressed to get anything else to go as well as one for the same outlay.

Somehow i don't want a silvia, mainly because i see too many of them. I'd like to be different, and i'd probably pay for it.

Maybe a 280zx will do...

I'd also like an AE85 or 86, but their cult status in Japan is huge and importing one in a good condition will be hard to find, and very expensive.

I want a really cheap car, so i have money to mod it, Silvia's are expensive when you don't have a job...yet.

if you wanted a cheap drifter get a K or A series rear drive corrolla, very similar to the 86 for much much less money....but wanting a 260Z suggest he wants some style too hehe, there was a pretty clean 260Z going at the RAAF base up here for around $1200 but that was cheap, needless to say it dissapeared quick. The barge arse 280 model will prolly be easier to find though...

if you don't have any sort of income,ANY car is going to be difficult to setup.

if you just want something simple, that's easy to get bits for,and you can throw the tail of around a bit,I suggest you look at an older datto like an 81-85 Bluebird,or something from the late 70's,early eighties in the form of a toyota corolla.
they're not as 'cool' as a zed,but they fall into the realism category. they're cars that will do what you want them to,and are a realistic price, and easy to maintain.

a bluebird will cost you a max of about three grand to buy,and if you get a later version it may already be injected, which saves you some hassle if you decide to do an engine swap.
I almost bought one myself four months ago for a run around. it was $450 with three months rego, and had alloys, clean paint and a few nicities.

I can understand your wanting to go with a cool car right from the start, but unless you have a serious budget behind you, you're going to have to start a bit lower.

good luck,

Justin...

I do have quite a bit of a budget...and somehow i don't think this is a 'cool' car compared to Silvia's, RX7's etc...

I just want a car, to have fun in...isn't that what life is about? Having fun? I have 4 months before i head off to uni, and i'd sure as hell like to have fun...sideways :D

An old 300/280zx will do for me...

I don't want insane quarter mile times, or decent laps of Wakefield Park... i want a car that is easy to hang the tail out...other than a Silvia etc...

i'm actually thinking of a car change now... r31 skyline...

Can you guys estimate a cost for a RB20DET swap?

Or a DR30 skyline...OLD SCHOOL DRIFT! :D

Go the old school dr30 with an fj20. I,ve seen them at importers for about $6500 with good sus, strut brace and wheels. FJs are tough nut to crack, it will handle drift abuse. Forget the 280, unless it's an import L28 turbo jobbie

Cheers
Dave

Dude why you going for an Rb20det swap, just get a car with the engine already in it, they are eligible for import under the 15 yo rule, and you keep any mods the car has.

you can pick up a very handsome R31 GTS-x RB20DET, coupe for 7-9 grand.

Also, you can look into R30 Skylines too, they look awesome and fairly similar to the R31, they will come with a FJ20DET.

Go the old school zeds and skylines, love em to bits

Yeah i think i'll look into an old school skyline now...FJ20DET now that's a engine that withstands a beating. The top s15 drag cars use these engines...

A DR30 or R31 is my preference now...a white one... :D
