Good morning :)

Which do you think is the go.....Mazda RX7 series 4/5 or a Mark 3 Toyota Supra (Turbo version of both)....which one will give the quicker 0-100 with mildish mods (bigger turbo, intercooler etc)....what about other reasons for choosing one over the other?....

Thanks everyone

I like the MK3 supras, but they are a pretty heavy car - and they have a nasty habit of blowing head gaskets.
First thing to do after getting one is to re tension the head bolts.

Depends what sort of car you want.

RX7 is a lighter car, better in the twisties, lots of parts available but can be unreliable when modified.

MK3 Supra will have alot more torque down low and can make good power with the std turbo, but as Dumhed has said, they are a heavy car and they have a habit of blowing head gaskets (7MGTE engine)

Ask Ma70Supra, his supra makes real good power on 10psi with std turbo/cooler. 8)

i love those old school supras.

But they are damn heavy. The 1jz-gte equiped Mk III supras are damn quick and resonably bloated, not everly.

divios thats a mk4. mk3s are "ok". stock the 7mgte is a rather shit engine, but good figures can be made from it. as has been said theyre borderline whales. pick of the bunch would be the Type R ones with recaro interiors and 1JZ engines. they also shed a hundred or two kilos. Any of the 1jz models are only available as a import. Very difficult to find in nsw as under the old import scheme only a place in WA could compliance them

personally id go the rotar, cant beat them for power, plus they look very tidy too

the MkIII's now fall under the 15 y/o rule and IF you can find a 1JZ-T, then bringing them over would be awesome.

most of the ones for auction in japan are 7mgte, that special edition crap.

the mkIII's also come in 2.oL twin turbo, cant remmeber exactly what the engine code is tho.

GA70 - 2 litre straight 6 twin turbo 1ggte -- high revving engine, not much torque. Some models came in a ugly narrow body.
MA70 - 3 litre straight 6 single turbo 7mgte 185 KW J spec-- plenty of low down torque and the stock turbo can be high flowed for plenty of power.
-- a Turbo A varient of the above has bigger cams, MAP sensor engine and upgraded suspension -- 500 ever made.
JZA70 - 2.5 litre straight 6 twin turbo 206 KW J spec-- The first of the J series Toyota engines, Beatiful straight power curve and a solid as rock bottom end. Very high and reiable power outputs. The only problem is the stock ceramic turbos can't take more than 14 psi or so.
-- The R varient of the above has better suspension, Momo gear knob, Momo steering wheel and Bilstien suspension.

Hope that helps. :)
Sorry don't know much about the RX7's.

BTW the RX7 is lighter and more nimble, it would be better in twisties and autoX, however the Supra has an excellent suspension setup capable of very fast cornering speeds.
"Stock vs Stock" comparisons have been done. The Supra can beat an RX7 on "most" tracks.

With regards to the head gasget issue on the 7MGTE, that head-gasget myth was traced back to a coolent problem. It's a very picky engine when it comes to coolant types. Use the right coolant and it'll never blow. Need the special red toyota stuff.

i read somewhere that if you put a trd head gasket on, it fixes the classic 7m gasket woes. The standard one had a manufacturing defect or something. That said TAKE THE ROTOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Personally if it were me i would be taking the series 4 / 5 RX7 basically its more suited to what i'd do with the car.

I know this isnt a good pic but if this is the type of supra your on about then there is no way they would beat an rx7 s5 stock for stock.

This thing on the pic was stock and from the way it was going round the track it looked like it was trying hard too. I beat it in my S12 with soft suspension.

Anyway i know i cant judge all supras by what i saw so if you have proof then id be more than happy to see it!

:)
