From the last time i was out there in a 4wd (like 10+ years ago) it's not the 2wd/4wd thing that's the problem it's your ground clearance. We went in a Grand Vitara in 2wd mode but it rubbed it's belly in a fair few places. Note we stuck to the tracks and stuff between the dunes, didn't go clambering straight up the side of them! We went in through Lavis Lane which requires you to actually drive through the dunes into the beach, if you went down through Birubi you could probably just about drive anything onto the beach there just let the tyres down a bit.
From my minimal experience down there. I usually just go and park on the sand at Birubi cos there are no parks at the beach in summer haha.

Unfortunately not, to heavy & to low and wrong tyre/rim size to be of any use on the sand.

To answer to the original query if you can find an older suby sports wagon they are a winner on the sand. Light for what they are and have 14's with 70 series stock. Let them down to around 13 - 15psi and you are all set.

Only downside is lack of power but they have a high & low range so whack it in low range and use 3rd & 4th and keep it singing.

It'll be the belly of the car hitting the sand and bogging you that will be your main issue i reckon.
On the beach itself just about anything could drive around, it's the soft stuff getting out there that would be the problem.

I reckon weight, wheel base & lack of ground clearance will be your enemy.

There is some beaches where the stagea will be ok (IE, hard packed with moist sand) but I guarantee you its not stockton. To get from the entry though the dunes to the beach will be a significant challenge in a stagea.

That all being said I am happy to be proved wrong as its not my car

I've been on stockton and 1 mile before in a hilux and you don't want to try and take an M35 on there.
I drove my C34 onto Fingal beach for some photos and I reckon that's about as off road as they're able to handle -hard packed smooth beach sand. you won't get through dunes, especially without locking the centre diff and having an LSD in the back.

I reckon a sierra is the best bet for a cheap fun toy.
