I was watching pimp my ride last night and one of the episodes the guy is doing up a 1989 Nissan 240sx. It looked like a Silvia back end with a 180 front.

He was doing it up to look like the one in the Need For Speed game. The one in the game had the normal 180 back on it.

So my question is do the Americans call both Silvias and 180s the 240sx?

yup

its the equivalent of a onevia like magnets car

FYI the need for speed car is a 180sx/240sx 'hatch' whereas the one that guy had was the 'coupe' model in the US

it kinda looked ok, but in a 180 form it would have been better

thats an old old old episode, probably from the first season

Yeah it was from session one, So they have a coupe and a hatch version of the 240sx and they are both called 240s?

Yeah all american S13s had the pop up nose but they called both the coupe and fastback model the 240sx since they were powered by a KA20E (early) and KA24DE (later) engines.
The KA24DE with turbo added sounds like a fun motor, although lots of seppos rip them out and replace them with CAs or SRs because it's cool to do that.
Personally if i had one a turbo on the big block 4 would be the go, i've seen one running stock SR20DET management with a turbo added, apparently it works quite well for SFA money (amazingly).

From what I am led to believe and from what I have read the KA24 is a boat anchor. I think that is why so many people pull them out to put in a smaller engine like the SR20.

Mind you this may be just because it was NA. It may not be that bad with a turbo.

Yeah it's a truck motor, i think they used them in the Navara as well.
But with a turbo i suspect it's a real torque monster :).
150hp standard i think they were so not as bad as some engines.

A descent base figure is a good starting point but it depends on how durable it is across the whole package. If I gets to 5000 rpm and drops it's lunch the base figure is kind of irrelevent.

You mean if it gets to 5000rpm and it blows up or if it gets to 5000rpm and just dies in the arse power wise?
I wouldn't care if it had no power over 5000rpm provided it had mountains of torque under that figure.
From what i know of the KA24 they are a very solid bastard though, they seem to be capable of quite serious power with a turbocharger on their side and no internal mods.
I think they are cast iron block with alloy head.

Apparently they're not allowed to have the S13 fixed headlights as they're not adjustable. They can adjust the pop-ups so they aim away from on-coming traffic.

Hmm sounds wierd, i'm sure my Silvia headlights adjust, in fact i'd be very suprised if any car had non adjustable headlights.
I always assumed it was purely a styling and marketing decision.
Having two different noses on the same car is a rather Japanese thing to do but a bit to hard for yanks to handle.

the Silvia headlights are completely adjustable, but some countries don't allow projector low beams (including Australia most of the time - I think the SEVS system lets them through)

Interesting.
I still doubt that story is true as the early model Silvia front end that would have been available at the launch of the 240SX in the US would have been the normal 4 headlight front end not a projector setup.

actually some US states didnt allow square headlights at one stage. no shit, this is why the jaguar XJ40 soverign in the US has round headlights where as the rest of the world got the square ones untill the US sold so many units they changed all the ones elsewhere

Really?
They really went away from that trend fast with cars like these!

Given the age of the S13 and the number of square american cars at that time i doubt that's a reason either.
Also the 180sx has square headlights to ;).
