My sisters car does the exact same thing (Astra). My bro is looking at it in the next week or so - he's a mechanic - so I'll keep you posted if it hasnt been sorted by you yet:)

my mates astra, has been babied all its short life, and develpoed a noise coming from the Hub ( we think ), Holden charged $800 (!!!) to replace it, but oh, the noise persisted. He took it back to them and they decided to change the hub on the other side ( free of charge ) and the noise dissapeared. I can't help but think it was more co-incidence that the gremlin went away, rather than they actually solved the problem.

Sounds like a gnome infestation to me.
Most of the GM cars have it too some extent, they make things like electronical wiring, brake rotors and plastics with some kind of compound that european and yank gnomes dont eat, but aussie gnomes are all over it like a fat bitch at a buffet.
Worst thing is, they get stoned off their tits drinking the oil, snorting the grease and just go ballistic chewing on brakes, transmission and suspension struts until theres nothing left.

I reckon you might be able too lure them away by putting a drip tray under your neigbours holden full of oil or by buying a Toyota, gnomes dont like Toyota's, they taste like shit.
