I'm looking at buying an N13 pulsar as a cheap runaround car, i've found one but it needs the timing belt replaced.. is it a hard/expensive job? rough costs for parts? is it a DIY job?

thanks boys!

camira motor right? they're not particularly difficult to do. from memory the water pump runs off of the timing belt on those, and is used as a tensioner for it as well,so you may as well replace that too while it's apart.

budget $400 or so for parts, including the little things like hose clamps and the like.
it's a DYI job if you know how to do a timing belt already. if not, pick up the workshop manual for the car while you're in getting the parts.

Yep they are run off the water pump which is the tensioner. Makes it difficult to tension right if you have not got a good tool to do it with. Saying that it is possible but more awkward.

Also these things are free running so if you bugger it up it will only run really rough.

As fergo said replace the water pump as well because when you disturb the o ring it will leak 9 times out of 10.

could the timing belt be an indication of anything else that is wrong with the engine? would i still be able to test drive the car if the timing belt is playing up?

What do you mean the timing belt is 'playing up'?

if the belt is completely gone (snapped !), and it snapped while the engine was running, then u can bet the engine is borked by now.

People generally change their timing belts at the 100,000 km interval, and they normally just use this as the indicator mark to do so.

timing belt replacement intervals vary from car to car,but the most common is 100,000km. my lexus is meant to have it's done at 140,000km...

as risking said earlier, these engines are free spinning, not interference,so you can snap a belt and not break anything. the valves won't make contact with the pistons.
the 3SGE in the St162 celica is the same, for another example.

a worn timing belt will make a flapping/rattling noise. this alone is not indicative of any other issues. you would replace the cam and crankshaft seals while it was off,as this saves on labour, but that's all.

Also if you are looking into an N13 budget a few dollars to replace the PCV breathers and rubber hose.
They tend to block up pretty fast and cause all sorts of strange oil leaks. There is a gauze filter inside the rockercover, a small rubber hose just above number 3-4 spark plug and the rocker cover gasket while its apart.

ballpark without knowing the prices of the parts I would say $500 including the parts, give or take a bit obviously.
