Hi Guys,
From what i've read from other posts, CA are pretty much a straight bolt in job for the S12.

Just have a few questions;

Do you use the standard CA18 engine mounts? or the CA20 mounts?

Does anyone know if the FJ20E can be fitted without modifying the bonnet (RS)? (or is it the inlet manifold that hits the bonnet? as the non turbo's have a smaller rocket cover)

Is it hard to find a manual hatchback with IRS?

Im considering building a low budget hatchback with a CA18DE as a daily. The non turbo is because the motors are cheap as, and it would be getting a punishment so a motor replacement wouldnt be difficult.

Can you incorporate basically everything else? e.g. radiator, starter, standard fuel pumps etc?

This project wouldnt be scheduled for a few years but im just curious for the questions above.

Cheers

Martin

Use the CA18DE mounts since they are already bolted to the donor engine, CA20 ones probably fit to tho.
Rad, gearbox, fuel pump would all bolt up/be suficient for a CA18DE.
Hatches with IRS are easy enough to find, most coupes are live axle though.
FJ20E probably won't fit under the stock bonnet, i think they are just to damn big, i wouldn't go that path myself, even though they are 150hp apparently they lack response and never really feel like they have that much power (even more so now that they are so old). They will be more expensive, harder to find and harder to get parts for than a CA18DE (which you can pick up for around the cost of case of beer for a running one if you look in the right places).

Thanks for the info guys, i'd have to turn down the offer on the CA18DET tho, simply cause this would be a low budget, do it all myself project and I want something that wont cost me alot of money when I due blow a motor.

Although I must say you are wrong about the FJ non turbo motors. From all the owners i have spoken to, they talked highly about how they are a really revvy motor and easily wind out to 9000rpm.

All the fj20E would be nice, I cant past the bang for buck CA18DE for installation and replacement cost.

I left one question out, if I drop a CA18DE in, will I need to get the car engineered?

or will I simply need a blue slip since im actually dropping engine capacity?

Cheers

Martin

I don't have a link for them, but you can look up the NSW vehicle modification rules on the RTA website. I'm 99% sure that you can self-certify a CA20E to CA18DE conversion, i.e. no engineering certificate required, just a blueslip.
