Allright, im struck with a dillema here.

Ive had my faithful old CA18 180 for a while, but there are a few things wrong with the ol girl.
- Rust has began to show near the rear spoiler (500 or so to rip spoiler off and fix)
- Had a little run in with a Rav4, dent on the front guard (quoted 500)
- And the straw that broke the camels back, my head gasket is leaking (common problem with CA's i beleive). Monetary wise i am better off to replace the engine (1400 or so)

I was planning to fix all that up and replace the engine with an s14-s15 engine (cause the cars in absolutely great condition apart from what was mentioned), but now my minds turning to buying a 95 model.

Help me out here people. And sorry for the long post.....

Depends on what you want...

If you want a more powerfull car, keep it and do the S14 motor upgrade :)

yeah, i agree, it depends what you want out of it.
and how much you want to do yourself.

i would to a transplant because the car will be very hard to sell.

if the cars in good nick and you like it then id do the transplant.

if you want cheap power do an rb motor conversion (rb 20 or rb25) they are dirt cheap easy to install and make easy power plus the sound of a a six turbo is awesome. i have an s14 motor in my silvia and its very quick but very very fragile (2 rebuilds) if you must get an sr get the s13 model.

The '94-'96 180sx has the same black top engine as an s14. If you were to buy an s14 engine and do the conversion, you would have to make sure you bought a jap import engine, otherwise it would not be as powerful as the '95 180.Plus you'll need new engine management,brakes,e.t.c. I'd go the new car-it will probably have some go-fast goodies already on it too.
But,as usual,it all depends on the funds!

......i probably just confused you even more.....sorry.

WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The s14 black top has vvt plus t28 turbo, the s13 has t25 and no vvt. The s14 motor is destinguished by the hump on front of the rocker cover which is where the vvt cam gear sits.

Sorry dudes..this can get confusing eh!
The '96-'98 RPS13 180sx type X came out with the black rocker cover but no vvt and the t25g.I assumed all 'black tops' had vvt.As you said, it was not until the s14 that the SR got vvt.Even though the S14 was being produced at the same time, the 180 missed out (i think the factory Sileighty got it).I didn't realise there were 'humpless' black tops.
....i hope all that is correct!

yeah, SALL GOOOD

ive also heard that the black top S13 motor can come with a T28 non roller bearing but i doubt the validity of this as it doesnt make economic sense from a manufacturers point of view.

I'm pretty sure all 180sx's after 94 had black top motors (which are diff to s14 black tops) because mine is a 94 model and has a black top without the vvti bit. I'm pretty sure it's a T25G.

SPL,you are right too.'94 and '95 180's have black tops also, but they are before the facelift type X varients with the round tail lights. (i think?!)

yeah my 180sx is a prefacelift model. I'm pretty sure 94 and 95 180s are the old face and 1996 on has the facelift. Both with the same motor (black top non vvti t25g)

someone correct me if i'm wrong.

hey mate, you know what i think of the matter... RB25 time !! :D :D sell off the g'box and engine for like a grand, save the 5K for the engine swap, put the 1K into brakes (unless you get a nice front cut..), and there you have it (isnt it always so easy on paper!!)

black top 180s only have t25g, and to my knowledge, arent vvt either

btw this is the guy from the dyno day with the white 180 :)

Hey EXQS, yeah dude, i want a white 180!! LOL!

Im not looking for out and out horsepower. Just a nicely powerful car. Will be concentrating more on the handling of the beast cause we all know its a lot more fun cornering than driving in a straight line.

Well pending some extra funds from my folks, i have my heart set on a new 180. Now to get a buyer for mine...
