I believe that for the best value "bang for buck" mods, you shouldn't touch the internals. In this case, what would be the best choice of upgrade turbo (and other non-internals) to safely and reliably maximise driveable torque/power running on standard internals?

Q1. Best Turbo?
Q2. Max boost to run?
Q3. Other non-internal essentials? (eg. air filter, exhaust, fmic, fuel pump, injectors, air flow meter, others..)

the favourite turbo at the moment is the S15 turbo. At the NSSC dyno day an S15 pulled 226 at the wheels with a stock turbo (everything else done though :))

S15 turbo, S15 injectors, re-mapped stock ECU, Walbro fuel pump, full exhaust, pod, Z32 AFM, front mount cooler, etc would probably be the best bang for your buck combo - and should get easily over 180rwkw reliably running ~1 bar of boost.

180rwkw would be optomistic on an s13 engine, i have seen 160rwkw but on a fresh motor. I would spend the little extra and get a bolt up HKS 2540 for around $1800 which will easily make 190-200rwkw on 1bar boost, obviously with ecu, injectors etc done. After you do all the bolt ons all you need is something like an HKS 1.6mm head gasket and some ARP head studs for a reliable 220 and up at the wheels on 1.5 bar on a stock bottom end .

try hikari_japan@telstra.com for turbo prices.

Hikari also sell Garret 25/40's which you can pick up brand new for the price of a secondhand HKS 25/40, I think they have similar specs.

Get a 3 inch exhaust all the way through, and a frontmount. You have to look at injectors, fuel pump, computer/chip and airflow meter if you are chasing high power as Dumhed has mentioned.

I have heard of S15's running 17psi with standard internals and a 25/40.

I've seen 160+ from a T25G on an S13 with stock cooler too...

nup, different one.

there's no reason that 160rwkw will crack the block, but the T25G might not last too long...

Apparently there's a bolt on kit for the S13, using an S15 turbo and other necessary upgrades which guarantees 200rwkw.

Just read about that on NS.com, do you know what parts are involved?

Surely full exhaust, FMIC, fuel pump, injectors, boost controller, filter, and tuning at minimum

Thats a big claim 200rwkw is alot harder to achieve than what most ppl think.
Also is it still reliable at that level??

Dude, there are SR20's with S15 turbos that are getting over 220rwkw.. There was one at the dyno day the other week

So over 200rwkw isn't that far fetched

I'm with the S15 crowd here, that turbo has turned out to be a lot better than anyone expected. Stick an HKS badge on it and it would sell for more than 3k.

For results, with an exhaust, FMIC, boost and tuning you're looking at around the 190-195 mark, Some a bit more, some a bit less but this is the ballpark. A standard S15 does have the fuel for this however it's strongly advised that the fuel pump is replaced as this fails very quickly under these demands. I'd also recommend a Z32 MAF at these levels, even if you can get a standard one to work you'll find a huge inprovement in the quality of the tune with the bigger MAF (or map)To get up around the 220 mark cams will be needed, not big ones mind you, just some 256/264 ones will do. The car that pulled 226 also had some ceramic coating, a manifold, bigger tb, MAF etc etc

Personally this is as far as I'd push a standard internalled SR, yes, there are examples of some who are making more power than this, there are also examples making less who have had things go bang. This package makes for a _very_ quick street car as it comes on boost so early, it's almost impossible to get it off boost!!

One question yet to be answered is what boost have these turbos been pushed to to make the power.

Internals aside what is the S15 unit good for without causing excessive shaft speed durability problems?

S15 turbos are running about 17psi max with all the other goodies. Daily run around a bit lower and they should see a long life if taken care of well. Anymore boost and its out of its efficeincy and just putting strain on the turbo itself, therefore destroying it quickly.

The ones from the dyno day getting 190ish would run around 17psi, some tailing off in the last 1500 rpm to 14/15psi, some holding it to redline. The 220kw atw run was done on 17psi with a tiny bit of tailing off in the high rev ranges
