Hey guys,

I’m thinking of buying a 180sx. I’m looking at the 1994~ models with the SR20DET, manual. I have some questions about this car.

I’m planning on using it as my daily car; I want a stock example which I may modify in the future. My main concerns are reliability. How is the reliability? What is known to go wrong mechanically with these cars? Are parts easy to find? Are parts cheap?

Thanks

Yup they are reliable.
Problems:
Cracks in the front end, around the strut towers, inside the wheel arches, firewall and around where the brake lines come through from the engine bay.
Ignitors/coil packs sometimes die usually due to heat. 5 minute job to replace either.
Power window control sometimes dies, dry joints, resolder.
Most of the bushings will be fairly flogged out by now if the car is all OEM, just replace them.
That's about all i can think of right now but i'm sure there is more.

Oh yeah i wouldn't get too carried away by the year, i'd look more at the overall condition and not too much at the kays. Any of the SR cars are virtually the same (a few more differences in the late 96 onwards cars but no matter).
Good luck finding a stock one.

Thanks for the reply

I have found a near stock one. The only modifications are...

coilovers all round, BOV, air intake, turbo timer, sound, and wheels. The car is not boosted, and the original air intake is provided.

I'm actually much more interested in handling modifications more so than power/speed modifications.

My main priority at the moment is reliability and parts availability/pricing, I slowly want to get into modifications. I'm really keen to ditch the boring camry station wagon for something I will look foward to getting into and driving 8)

Yeah there isn't really much need for power modifications on an SR powered car for just driving enjoyment or doing laps and whatnot.
Stick on an exhaust, throw the BOV in the bin, stock intake, yeah it'll be fun.
Handling wise, well you've probably got 90% of the mods on there, change anything else based on feel rather than what you think you should have.
S13 is about the cheapest car around as far as parts availabilty (for mods, it's ok for spares too) goes so it's a piece of cake to do things to it, not painfull like it can be with some cars haha.

I have been daily driving my car for around 6 months. I have not had a single problem with anything with simple 5000k services.

I have a 180 that is a daily.
Had it for almost a year.
It has probably spent 3 months not being driven because of stuff ups with mechanics etc.
I just warn you, before trusting ANY mechanic with your new 180 make sure that people on the forum go there or people on nissan silvia recommend them.

I can recommend Drift Garage whole heartedly and I know quite a few people also use Louie there.

Good luck with any purchases etc.

shift are pretty good .. they charge an arm and a leg for their stuff though ..
they do stock the genuine good stuff ... motul , elf oils and stuff like that .
i havent had a bad experience with them yet ..
they are generally nice guys and have always helped me with any of my enquiries .
if your unsure just ask them questions .. ?
