Post subject: | 180sx sr20det redtop high idle |
Hey guys, recently purchased a redtop sr20det 180sx, hasnt been started in about 8 months, pretty much stock other then exhaust. The car cold starts fine: idles at 1500rpms, then drops as per usual to about 900rpm, after 5 minutes or so of warming up, the idle raises to 1800-2000rpms, and it just stays there. if i turn on aircon it increases the idle to 2100rpm. Any idea whats going on? |

stepper motor playing up and raising the revs to compensate for something else ? |

stepper motor?? try the idle control valve. might be stuck open/closed. take it off the manifold and give it a good clean out with carby cleaner. you might be able to disassemble it further to get the carbon out |

isn't the stepper motor where the TPS is ? it adjusts idle according to how much load is on the motor ie A/C ? |

Nissan don't tend to use stepper motors for idle control. They have an idle control solenoid (actually two) to control the idle speed and fast idle (for A/C, P/S load, etc) The valve can clog up and cause problems, but a dodgy temp sensor, wiring, plugs, air leaks, etc can all have similar symptoms. |

Hey guys, thanks for all the input, i think it could be the idle control valve; i've been lazy to clean it out and after a week of driving the idle issue went away. just yesterday i decided to clean the engine bay with degreaser, and now the issue is back, when i discconect the plug going to the idle control valve it idles fine, but as soon as i plug it back in the idle jumps back to 2000rpms on idle. When the plug is unplugged and i turn on aircon the revs dont rise to compensate. Do these symptoms all point to the idle control valve? |

it sounds like that's the fault, because if it was in good condition and you d/c it, then it shouldn't have affect the idle at all |

Excellent! didnt realise how dirty the whole throttle body was, as soon as i started the was dirty gunk and oil everywhere!, but after the clean it now idles at 900rpms =], thanks for all the help! |

no problems its probably worthwhile removing the entire intake manifold and giving it a clean out |
