My engine had significant wear in the head, the cam lobes and rocker arms were so damn worn down... even the rocker arm curves were going the wrong way...

Apparently that's what caused my engine failure (I'm not convinced but lets run with this idea)...

If this is the case, and my turbo isn't busted, would it be ok if I used the same turbo or would the contaminated oil left over int he turbo find its way back into the new (second hand) engine?

Can I get the turbo cleaned out or something? My mechanic said he'll do his best to save the turbo by cleaning out the lines (which I'll probably replace anyway) etc etc. But what would he be doing? would it be enough and would the left over contaminated oil find its way back??

help!!

I'm no expert but you could take the turbo to a specialist place like GCG and have them strip it down, replace the seals, give it a good clean etc, then you will have nothing to worry about...well...except the new engine! :D

^ Problem there is GCG have a minumum of about $600 to rebuid a turbo then parts that it needs will coast extra. Maybe you can pay for cleaning i dont know havent ever heard of it.

Ive seen and heard of a blowen engine putting little bits of metal through the oil and it getting into a turbo and fucking the turbo.

If it where me to be on the safe side i would get it rebuilt or buy a new bigger turbo.

I think Ball Bearing turbos are more resilient to these sorts of issues than the old bush bearing turbos are.

Personally I'd probably flush the core with a litre of diesel to clean out the old oil/metal mixture, and flush with some clean oil then put it back on.

I'd just chuck it on the new engine run it for half an hour at idle with clean oil and then do an oil and filter swap.

I'm very reluctant to do anything that completely removes oil from the bearings.

Any shit left in the turbo will go straight into the sump (and there will be bugger all in there to begin with) and so has to go back though the filter before running around the rest of the engine.

If you're really paranoid run it with the oil return off for a few minutes so any crap is pushed out all together.

And yeah, on the GCG cost topic. My new comp wheel will cost me $815 by the time the turbo is stripped and reassembled with new oil seals and a balance with the comp housing tidied up. They cant check your cart without disassembly so even if it is all good you will be looking down the barrel of 500+

See if can see anything in there. In theory any metal that has made it down into the sump should be filtered by the oil filter before it makes it to the turbo. Being the pressure side that will carry it to the gallery.

In short I think its okay
