Hello guys, i am new to these forums as i am picking up my 180SX tomorrow. Its a 96 model, red, blacktop SR20DET, 97,000kms.

I am posting this to introduce myself and also get some first turbo owners advice.

What do you recommend i do:

1) Full service
2) Intercooler (FMIC)

I am thinking towards number one, as it is approaching 100,000kms and the timing chain should be replaced..any other advice for a 180sx noob?

congrats!!

FYI the timing chain should pretty much only be replaced when it breaks. and if the engine has been looked after, it probably wont ever need changing.

anyway, there are plenty of places you can take the car, what area are you in? that might make it easier for us to locate a reputable workshop.

any FMIC kit designed for a 180SX will do the job, what it comes down to is how much you are willing to spend. obviously, the more you spend, the better quality kit, fitment AND build quality. but even the cheap brands do the same job as something 5 times the price.

If the timing chain breaks then you might be replacing more than the chain.

I see. I am thinking of getting a front mount straight away.

Another thing...What makes the sr20's sound like jets when they are coming on boost?
My mate used to have a skyline with a pod, fmic, slightly boosted and it sounds like a jet! u can hear the turbo spooling from a mile away? Is it the aluminium piping from the front mount? or what?

Also what is the easiest way to block up the stock BOV? as there is a trumpet BOV but the vac line is not connected..

BTW i live in sydney, northern suburbs

ok to get flutter, remove BOV, block up any piping left open by removal. this will probably lower the life expectancy of the turbo.

a pod on the intake will make the spooling sound louder, a metal intake pipe louder again, and a bigger turbo even louder still.

That was not the question. I know this as i am a member to other forums and do respect the search button. The questions wasnt that hard to answer.


ZEi250t - Thanks, will do. I wasnt really after flutter as there is an aftermarket trumper BOV, but i also suspect the stock BOV is still there and not blocked up. Is it hard to reach?

its attached to the stock intercooler i think - never owned an S13 so im not 100%.

as for the aftermarket one, just put the vacuum line back on it and let it work. if there isnt one now, i bet youre losing boost because it will be leaking without another pressure source on the other side of the spring.

I have a feeling that is the case...for a stock turbo and motor the car wasnt coming on boost very hard...i have a feeling its got something to do with the loose vacuum connection.

Where does it connect upto? somewhere on the TB?

Of course your questions aren't very hard to answer, but neither is spending 5 mins doing a search and then posting up a question if you can't find what you're looking for.
The forum has been around long enough for a lot of newcomers to ask the same types of questions your asking. Were all happy to help, but I guarantee you'll find out so much more about your car by searching through old threads then asking one off questions.

How does the car run by the way? A boost leak will make the car run rough enough for you to know there is a problem, even if its only small one.

what i would do

full service,
all fluids, engine, gearbox, diff
flush radiator and new coolant
spark plugs
all new filters

then mod wise

turbo back exhaust
front mont intercooler kit (greddy arent too expensive for a jap brand)
fuel pump (a walbro or bosch in tank)
electronic boost controller (something like a Greddy profec B )


enjoy :lol:

then focus on suspension, coilovers sway bars ect

Get used to it, it is sr20 powerd, they generaly dont go very hard.

sr20s wih stock boost dont really have a kick to them, almost fell as if there no boost

on 1 bar they feel a little better though, but ake sure you have supporting mods

my s14 was run on 1 bar with a stock fuel pump :o
