| Post subject: | new clutch + synchro or new gear box? |
hey guys. im not sure wat i should do. my clutch has begun to slip. as i have only bought the car... also my second gear synchro is stuffed (grinds wen i change). now the question is wether to get a new gear box and clutch, or just replace the clutch.. any thing that might help me decide would be good thanks! |

It depends on your budget. The clutch needs to be changed, thats a given. The second gear syncro is stuffed, but the box still works so it can stay for a while. You can try some different gear oil for a start, castrol fully synthetic would be my recommendation if you want to have any chance of masking the problem without significantly shortening your box's life. It isn't cheap though. |

would it cost more to change the whole gear box or rebiuld my existing one? i was told roughly 500 for a 2nd hand gear box out of an sr20.. im not sure how mcuh a rebiuld would cost. if i changed transmission fluids would it help the synchro? grind less or get into gear better? |

You'd have to get some quotes on rebuilds. I have no idea what a reco of an sr box is worth. If you can get one secondhand for 500 then it's a pretty good buy, but you don't know whether that one is in particularly good condition either. It's a bit of a lucky dip with gear boxes. |

its off a wrecker. ive asked him how the condition is he said its still good. with no synchro problems. what type of clutch is good for evey day driving? i was looking a exedy heavy duty. |

i had an exedy before. they are great! try and source one yourself as you can get them cheaper then a mechanic will charge you. |

roughly how much did the exedy HD cost you? most the local stores are quite competitive with prices. but thanks for that tip. last time i was charged 268 for a exedy HD clutch for my honda crv should i be looking around the same price? |

no... probably double or triple that amount.. my sister got exedy cushioned clutch installed 2 days ago. it cost her $550 installed and that is a SSS n14 |

sorry its misleading. wat i meant was 550 included both clutch and labour costs. i remember my crv got done 600 including labour and clutch. |

your prob looking around 180 - 250 for a heavy duty exedy clutch kit last time i found out which was only a few months ago for a sr20de . and andy if your sis payed that much she got ripped of man... i payed 180 for a sss exedy heavy duty last month... |

i was thinking it should cost about 200 - 280 for a exedy hd clutch. but im not sure about labour. |

yeh about 500-600 with labour... 250-300 is a good price.. i got charged once 450 for a exedy clutch but that was a different car and mr mechanic making some extra dosh off me lol |
