im personaly an rb nut, but i wouldnt remoove a working sr20 to put an rb in a silvia, however if the motor did let go, for the price of a sr20 these days id deff consider doing it... just wait till you actualy get the thing, then realise how much it costs to maintain over a old corrola... then we shall see if you still have any money left for a conversion :D

Hi Josh, there's three things you need to know first up, 1. Jays14 can't spell, 2. Rb's and S-chassis cars aren't a good combo and 3. Using the search function will tell you both of those, and give you 99% of the answers you'll ever need modding / maintaining any silvia..

Cons:
1. Heavier engine (thus cancelling the little bit more power they make in stock form) not to mention f*cking up the weight balance of the car..

2. You have to buy 6 of everything if you go down the road of re-building it when it pops..

3. Simple bolt-on's like a FMIC become a pain in the arse (you'll need custom piping and stuff..)

4. You'll have to spend more to get the same power out of an rb as an sr can make..

Having not done the conversion myself i'm sure i've forgotten some..

I'll post up pro's if I think of any..

Welcome to SilviaNSW anyway, I hope you find a mint silvia, and drive/enjoy it!

-Mitch

i tihnk the most expensive thing about the RBs are if you want to make sure that it has a long life and properly maintain it you got to spend the money for a good service.

i use to spend over $150.00 every 3000kms/3 months or so just on oil services or every time i went to the track.

now spark plugs hurt the pocket really bad at about almost 30bucks each and having to buy 6 of them was really painfull.

then theres other things such as diff oil changes, gear box and you cant use cheap stuff thats for sure. if you do you'll know about it.

thats just some of the minor stuff that i did for my GTR when i owned it.

their sexy!
just dont buy one from a dealer, get it from a import centre
shouldnt pay no more than 14grand for one!

Agreed! I have seen alot of Type-x's sell for between 13-15k with a good selection of mods :)

Also what do you plan on using it for as I have owned an R 180 and can tell you that looking back.. I had a list as long as my arm on fixing and making the conversion right and then there is weight balance to consider? I had to do alot of work to do in the way of wheel alignment and replacement suspension bushes to make it all work together gracefully :(

And in the end if I had the $$$ I should have just bought a factory SR version :)

That is why now I am looking at stepping into an SR powered car over my R33 to be used as an allround fun car :)

ok thanks to everyone for replies,
I think i would be happy with a SR engine, as i just had a test drive of a mates, and LOVED IT! :D

now what i would like to now, is how often you req to do service and how much it usually costs you??

I have a mate who owns WMC in unanderra and i know of a person whom works at bezerkly in wollongong.. as i wont bother about doing stupid stuff myself, ill do the easy stuff ;)

Change gear and diff oil when you buy it, then engine oil & filter every 5000km's/each trackday.. Thats all thats necesary really... You can prevent a lot of unnecessary stuff like replacing suspension bushes etc if you check all of them before purchase.

every fluid flushed and changed, every fliter changed, all coilpacks changed, have the bushes look at, and all belts changed, expect this to cost be around 1k as i wont it done properly, and some of the guys from sccs will prolly help me out with a few things also :)
