Im looking at buying a 180sx. Ive come across one that is fairly well maintained on the inside and outside, with very little damage to paint work and a fresh interior, however it has a noisy diff, and a really bad universal joint on the tailshaft which is knocking on gear shifts.

the car is priced fairly cheap ($8500) and Im wondering if its worth buying it and having these things replaced. The current market price seems to be around the 10-11k mark, and looking at the cost of these parts from wreckers and parts dealers, a nismo LSD goes for $1k new and the tail shaft anywhere from $100 to $300 used. Then theres the cost of labor as well.

It seems to be hard to get a car that is both well maintained appearance/interior wise with a good drivetrain. Pretty much every car I have looked at (except for one in a color I dont like) has been thrashed but kept clean inside and out, or has been driven by a grandma and has more dings than the vietnamese phonebook.

The car im looking at also has ABS, and apparently they use a different tailshaft to non-ABS cars. is this true?

When I was in the market for an s13 non turbo, it needed a new diff.
I was told a r200 diff would be the go, expect around $500 for that item.
Hope that helps.

Lock it : 100 or free if you know of a more dodgier way.

you can get a nsimo lsd kit new for $1000? where from, get me one too!!!
I paid $1900 for mine the other month when the 'rebuilt' GTR diff I bought from a member on here started clunking badly and whining like a school kid in the junk food aisle of woolies.

ABS tailshafts are a different length,as well as having a different flange.
locating a 2nd hand one through a wrecker or on here shouldn't be too hard.
