ok, here's the details....
sr20det with standard t25g, practically new 2.5" exhaust by liverpool exhausts installed about a month ago....

problems started late sunday night (goin home from the you know whats...)... started hearing a flapping like noise coming from my engine bay up to 2k revs.... but when i gave it some, it sounded not too bad.... only difference was, i was losing heaps of power, probably some boost (till this day, i have still not installed my boost gauge)... anyhow, since i could no longer hear the stock BOV which is normally quite noticable, i figured the problem was around the cooler, BOV area... maybe a loose hose... so i get home fine, and parked her for the night....

This morning, i checked her over heaps around the cooler area, everything looked fine.... so i started her up to head to my mate's house... same as the night before... i get that funny sound...

The car ended up in the driveway all day due to the rain, so we also couldnt get her on some stands to look underneath...

But when i started her up to head on the crawl home (about 2km), the idle was horrible... at that moment, i realised it was probablyt the exhaust gasket off the turbo....

Anyhow, question is, how do i make sure it is what i think it is? How much for a new gasket? what is the part number? and where can i get it from??

Any help would be much appreciated.... RJ

Flapping noise + bad idle-- perhaps the timing chain is loose?

This happened to my car aswell, took me months of taking it to clueless mechanics who didn't know what it was. Although in my case it was nowhere near as bad as yours (I did not notice any rough idle it was only on boost it would rattle real bad). In my case it was the manifold to turbo gasket which was about $40 from nissan. Don't have the part # anymore but they will know what you mean if you say the gasket between the manifold and the turbo. You might aswell replace the other gasket between the turbo and dump while you are at it.

If you are attempting to do this yourself it is a BITCH of a job if you don't have the right tools as you must remove the whole exhaust manifold from the block + dump.

Hope this helps, cheers.

Thanks for the info, Spl.... well, actually the idle isn't rough or anything, it just sounds bad... at first, i thought it was a vacuum or intercooler pipe that popped loose... but now, im quite certain its the turbo gasket...

went to an exhaust shop, and they said that nissan's tended to only have problems with the single turbo -> exhaust gasket... got quoted $150 to change it with me supplying a new gasket from nissan.... is that pricey??

R-Jay,

$150 is a good price as it is a bitch of a job. You might want to change both gaskets just in case the other one is leaking aswell, but in my experience it was the manifold to turbo not the turbo to exhaust. Just make sure the $150 includes everything as you will need new coolant as a fair bit will leak when you take the water lines off the turbo, best to change it. When I got mine done they did not bother with this and the car overheated. Needless to say I was pretty pissed off.

just done that job.

manifold gasket $13
turbo gasket $34
dump pipe gasket $54
parts from Nissan

its worthwhile to get all done at once. and costs a little over $200 to get installed.

p.s. at first it sounds bad then you just loose a heap of power and starts to piss you off heaps!

Hey purple, did the nissan dealer you got it from know the part numbers and stuff???

as for losing power, yeah, now not only does it sound bad (something like a diesel, or tractor), but now im running with no boost watsoever..... no power at all... and yes, im pissed off, hehehe....

They should only have one type of turbo/dump gasket and one type of manifold/turbo gasket as the only turbo car they have is the 200sx? Someone please correct me if i'm wrong.
