I've used oil flushes many times before, and have decided against them now. Running a cheap oil through the engine before you put your $70 oil in will pick up all the crap that would otherwise be picked up by the good oil straight away.

I've heard of a few bad experiences with oil flushes, while i personal haven't had any problems with them, i've decided not to use them.

If your serious about getting crap out of the engine, put a couple of hundred mils of diesel in the oil before you change it.

diesel? you serious?

Well, you know how well petrol cleans/disolves shit, diesel doesn't ignite, and i think it still has some lubricating propeties. I wouldn't do it in a good engine though. More of a thing to do in a shitter.

don't put diesel in the oil. not unless you like destroying bearings.

oil flushes work pretty well if you use quality products and follow the instructions.
ideally you don't let the motor sludge up too much in the first place.
run a flush through, and by the second oil change 5000km or so later it should be nice and clean internally.

the oil looking dirty straight after it's replaced isn't the end of the world btw. the oil is designed to hold dirt in suspension, and it doesn't noticeably affect it's performance.

the engine i was using it on had issues and was quite worn so it needed something that would remain stable when it was at operating temp and being thrashed. The other oils let the engine chatter quite a bit but formula R kept it relatively quiet even under high loads. It was a fairly thick oil tho, i used a 10w60... most of the other oils werent up to it (they were closer to a 50 weight)

i think that has more to do with the weight of the oil you used, rather then how 'stable' the other oils were or whether they were quality or not

just wondering, do all oils have that cleaning agent thing that motul has?

still tossing up what oil to use in my next service, ive been using royal

purple but it seems to be abit expensive to always change at 4000kms.

dont know whether to use motul 8100 full synthetic or castrol edge sport.

look at it this way, in 4000ks youll change whatever is in there anyway. theyre both good oils, try one for each 4k stretch and see which you would prefer.

all oils have some form of cleaning agent in them, diesel grade oils just have more in the mix than petrol engines do,to help keep them running decently and not gumming up,as diesel is so filthy.

if you're concerned with the condition of the inside of your engine,I'd run an engine flush through (we use a pink wynns bottle at work),then run a fresh load of oil and a new filter for a while (2-5k km depending on how dirty it was) and then do another change with another new filter and fresh oil of whatever quality type you prefer.

if engines have a LOT of kms on them, flushing them out sometimes makes things worse rather than better. remove the layers of varnish and gunk off of everything and the tolerances open up even more and you'll get rattles, loss of pressure and more blow by.
