How much people want you to pay for them.

Interior is updated.

Mechanically they are the same.

so they are the same mechanically, but updated a fair bit overall in the looks department...

cause im looking at getting a 180 in the not so distant future. Only downside is that i raced a type X on tuesday night, had the usual mods, exhaust, cooler, BOV... and i beat him... i thort they were faster haha

Anything could've caused that result. Maybe you raced an NA Type X

or maybe my car is just faster :p what should a 180 get 1/4mile with full exhaust, BOV, FMIC but still on stock boost? As id want mine to be hitting the 13's if not 12s unless u gotta plow too much cash into it...

yeahh i love 180's i wana get a type X but they are pretty expensive... and it HAS to be stock cause i dont want something that someone else has screwed around with...

Are there any probs getting insurance as they are imports?

Usual insurance issues for imports, ie it'll cost you a fortune if you are under 25.
Yeah they are just updated in the looks department and are obviously newer.
The ECUs on S13s did change a little over the years and the type X does run a different ECU, this makes 3/5ths of no difference to the performance of the car but does stop you from rechipping the ECU should you want to do that (which most people don't).
180sxs aren't overly quick stock, they put down a 15ish second quarter mile stock as a rock. Obviously a bad driver will extend this time even further.
Also if you ever come accross an old issue of HPI that talks about Type Xs, ignore whatever it says (ie that they ran S14 engines, had 5 stud standard, 4 pot brakes etc).
Plenty of bad info in older HPIs.

Oh yeah just food for though, a DC2 Type R will beat an S14 in a drag race if they are both dead stock (i think it was a DC2 anyways).

awsome info mate! thanks heaps
yeahh i figured insurance might be a slight nightmare, but it has been all my life with two loss of licences, and my age, but now those are behind me and ive got a no claims bonus for not having a claim in 3 years, that should help.
Yes im really keen on a type X, or possibly a stock 94model normal 180, but how slow they are stock is whats making me think twice haha, as my civic is fast enuf to beat mildly modded skylines, wrx's, 180's etc, i dont want to take a step backwards haha
because to get it to a 13sec mark would require atleast 5gz! full exhaust, FMIC, suspension set up, clutch, etc....but it would stil be fun in the wet stock or not haha

Good thing about an SR20 powered 180sx (so 92-98 models) is that making them faster is quite easy and cheap.
You will see very significant gains from a full exhaust and hiflow cat, and turning up the boost to around 1 bar will give you alot more go as well.
A bigger intercooler to cope with the boost and a drop in panel filter (that's all i run) and you'll have the car probably 2 or so seconds quicker over the quarter.
Further cheap mods from there are extractor manifold (10ish rwkw), T28 turbo (better top end, although not a startling difference to the T25G) and so on.
If you were after straightline speed and had $5000 spent on the car it'd be in the 12s not the 13s!

As an example i have spent roughly $8000 on my car all up (it's a Silvia not a 180sx but they are the same car), however only about $1500 of that has been spent on power up mods (the rest was on suspension, cooling, diff, wheels, brakes etc) giving me around 150rwkw. That's good enough for a 0-100 time of 5.6 seconds (on drift suspension) and the ability to smoke new 235/45 17" tyres around oran park all day long.

u certainly do know ur shiet :p
yeahh i do want it to go fast in a str8 line but also be prepped for abit of track fun aswell ie: coilovers, F&R strut braces and sway bars. i would intend to get a hi-flowed T28bb turbo and manifold but that would be sometime after i had the car how i wanted it... looks wise, just remove the rear wing and some jap style deep dish wheels and slammed haha

I basically want a 180 with enough balls to give me a thrill and beat alota cars etc...

Most of what i have mentioned is relatively common knowledge amongst those who have played with their Silvias/180sxs a bit.
And yeah the old SR should be able to provide in spades, with the right mods it's a cheap engine to get substantial gains out of as well.
Have a bit of a look around these forums at the turbos of choice and power figures achieved, 200rwkw is probably the sweet spot for an all round car that won't need rediculous money spent on supporting mods or on an engine rebuild (the stock motor can take 200rwkw happily).
