Hello all, a bit of a strange one here. I'm english but live in Niigata, Japan. Been here for a month now but have lived in Japan before (2000-1) and got the chance to come back so took it. Here with my wife and son. Well as soon as we arrived we drove straight to the local big car dealers and asked for the 2 fastest manual transmission cars they had as most cars here are auto. Well we went away (after 3 weeks of paperwork...) with a Subaru WRX for the wife (180,000yen) and I got a 1994 180SX type X with the SR20DET motor for 370,000yen. Sorry got no idea of the price in aus dollars.

Why has an english bloke living in Japan joined a NSW forum..? Well having had a look around the british forums are full of bull, the USA ones are, well, american, and the SR20tuning website (excellent info) led me here. I've read through and it seems the best 180 forum out there, hopefully I can pick a few brains and add to it. These are our first turbo motors. I've got 20 years race experience but all on normally aspirated engines.

Well the local race/drift circuit is 30 mins away and I've already been there a few times. My 180 already has an HKS super drager cat back system and pod filter. I've made friends with two local second hand race parts shops so within the next 3 months the following is planned:

high flow cat
downpipe
T28 turbo
tubular manifold
boost controller
front mount intercooler
ign/injection remap/piggyback
fuel pump
maybe injectors
roll cage
race seat
race belts
gauge set
circuit suspension
drift handbrake

The car already has 16x8 rears and 16x7 fronts but I may go to 17" wheels. Either way it wil end up with potenza circuit tyres on the front and the cheapest crappiest non stick tyres on the rear for drifting.

I tried to attach a pic but it said my pax upload was 1 byte, somewhat smaller than the pic!

Cheers all, hopefully have fun here.

Rich

Welcome to the club diablo. You're very lucky to be living in Japan and being surrounded by all that Jap goodness! :P

It sounds like your 180 was pretty stock when you bought it?

Thanks for the welcome :D My car is pretty stock now but I think its been meddled with before. Its got problems though so this weekends job is to find a dyno. I'll be very surprised if its putting out much more than 140bhp. When the turbo spools up you get a great hissing noise from the passengers footwell area which I guess is all the boost air leaking from somewhere. There is very little turbo kick so I reckon its got hardly any boost, and the air leak is making the fuelling wrong as it runs fine off turbo but from 3000rpm its all over the place. The wifes WRX leaves me for dead.

Rather than mess about fixing whats there I'll probably go and buy the tubular manifold from the local race shop for 19,000yen, a workmate used to work for ICS so he's seeing if he can get me a T28, buy an intercooler and just replace the lot.

As far as bits from here, well tonight I took the WRX to our neighbours car dealership for a new clutch as he got the bits trade price. First time I'd been and what a place...... nothing there less than about 400bhp and a line of 180SX's all with big intercoolers, roll cages, bodykits and all the toys. A few skylines, E86's and mercs made quite a car park. When I go back I'll try and get a cage and seat for my 180 as there are 2 second hand race shops next to his car dealership.

I met 2 brazilian drift boys over here, one has 300bhp in his 180 and one has 400bhp in a 200SX. Both are excellent drift drivers so I'll be picking their brains next time I see them. Must look kind of funny having and engishman and a two brazilians talking in Japanese!

Cheers,
Rich

Welcome aboard Rich,

Hope you enjoy ur stay.

Mate wondering if you could help me. Im going to Japan next yr and am trying to locate a car rental place that rents modified cars. I was looking along the lines of a FD or R34 GTR.

Phil.

Welcome Rich,

I hope you enjoy your stay on the forums, and sounds like you have certainly landed in an area of Japan alot of us here would dream about. Last time I was in Japan I could only find Autobacs :(

Look forward to seeing some pics of your drifter 180...
