Hi guys,

I'm interested to know if anyone here has undertaken a manual conversion themselves on a sr20 or ca18 180sx.

If there was any problems they had? Or if they had it done professionally where they took it to (im in brisbane).

If you did it yourself, how much were the costs? I'm told a ca18 gearbox is harder to find then a sr20 - how hard is it to find a ca18 gearbox ?

Any help is appreciated, I really wanted to suss this out before buying my car. I want a manual but the manuals I see forsale are pretty bad. Almost always class 1/2 imports which have been cleaned up.

thanks

I sort of did this while I changed my engine at the same time. It's not hard, it's all straight forward and quite easy. There is a very good guide at this link. http://members.iinet.net.au/~sayers/biscuits/trans.htm

Yeah, that site's wicked. The webmaster is on the nissans13 mailing list. When I was looking at first buying my car before and considering buying an auto and converting it to manual, the cheapst quote I got for parts was around $800. Tripper, if you had the right tools, I spose you would be able to do it in one day. You would need a tranny remover to make it go smooth. I just dragged my auto box out with rope :P and got the other box in with an engine crane (while still connected to the engine). If you were doing it the first time and without the tools, it may take 2-3 days but it also depends on how hard you get stuck into it etc. An engine conversion is fun but the actual physical labour is a bitch!

the only limitation i can see from me doing a manual conversion myself is getting enough ground clearance at home.

have access to wheel stands so hopefully they will be enough

I used two jacks and two safety stands and they were adequate. Two wheel stands should be adequate.

drove an auto blacktop 180sx today.

the back tyres were slightly flat so it was extremely easy to lose traction

other then that - i could deal with driving the auto at least for 6 months ish.

how hard would it be to source the 6speed box from the 200sx ?

Meh forget about the 6speed box unless your looking for a good way to waste 3 grand !! Just buy an sr20de (or det) box for $800 or so and slot it in... spend the rest of a good clutch and a turbo :D
