Hey guys, honoured to post here :D

I own a 1994 180sx SR20DET (5spd) with a blacktop motor without VVTi and i've recently installed an APEXi Power Intake w/ adaptor and a TRUST VSPL Intercooler kit.

Now, i've heard i need to make a heatshield (already bought the aluminium sheet and will make a cardboard version first) and my main question was about how to make a DIY cold air intake.

I've purchased 80mm unslotted black pastic piping (from Bunnings' plumbing section - warning, they only sell by the 10metre!) and cannot see a place to mount it, as there is some sort of tray blocking off the airpod from the vertex front guard, which is just part of the 180sx's front structure.

What is the best way to proceed? Can I demolish this tray to make room for my new DIY ducting??

As a secondary Q, I've sourced a small Odyssey 500v battery (the gold one) as the huge GReddy FMIC piping won't allow anything else, but i've been warned these don't respond well to heat - has anyone else encountered this? Anyone else running Odyssey batteries that could comment?

Thanks all

Yeh you can do that, or if you don't want to cut a hole in your car, run it between the engine and radiator shround, with 10m you'll have no problem getting it to the front bar, just watch the clearance between the air con and power sterring pulleys and belts, (I wired mine to the the gray plastic grill that feeds the stock coola on the 180s.

Welcome to the forums,

I pretty much have the exact same setup, vspl cooler , apexi power intake and also a vertex frontbar and this was my solution to the DIY custom air intake.

Image

basically just cut a large hole to next to the fmic pipe entry and used 2 tubes, heatshield and a carbon fibre airbox from topstage to finish it off.

happy with it, just have to avoid large puddles

thanks for the great advice :D it really helps to see the pics u posted as well redline. I will most definitely be doing the same thing for the CAI, although the fashioning of a heatshield may not be forthcoming in the very near future.
Another question though - what tools should i use to bore the hole in that metal plate like u did??

You just need a 3inch hole saw to make the massive hole.

Redline what material is your heat surround made off??
Not the carbon one the first pic?

Ill be getting my car back shortly and will be re-doing the air box I have that stuff looks pretty good.

Tidy install Redline...

Has anyone ever tried using a bigger factory air cleaner from something like say a Commodore that fits the available area and allows for a bigger element?

It would be nice to have something factory looking in that spot even if it isnt made by Nissan that flows better (obviously with an aftermarket filter like a K&N etc).

Can anybody comment on this intake for S13

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4617345581&sspagename=ADME:B:AAQ:AU:1#ebayphotohosting

Would it be safe to buy top stages kit if I was to use this intake?

Does anyone know if this unit is any good anyway?

Doesn't a commodore have the exact same filter?

I was referring more to the box rather than the filter. Something stocky looking that you could hide a decent aftermarket filter inside.
