If you dont'have the dollars probably get a CA18 and work on it more. If you can get an SR20 though it'll probably be more reliable, and go a bit better, at least in a stock or mildly modded state. (it does have 10% more capacity to begin with)

ok..
On a budget a CA18DET will be a better engine. Things like injectors etc are cheaper, and on a $10k modifying budget the CA18DET will make more power than the SR20DET. Though, being an older engine will most likely be less reliable, and in the end wont make as much power as a SR20DET overall.
a SR20DET will make more power but it will take alot more money to get the same power figures as you could get out of a CA18DET on a $10k budget. It will however, be more reliable and surprisingly better on fuel.
Hope that helps ya out a bit.
Ryan

how is the ca unreliable,
I have had no reliability problems out of my ca, your all byast barstads

True the ca is a older engine, true the sr has 10% more capacity.
Either way they are both good engines.

But saying the ca is unreliable is bullshit.

You could cop a unreliable SR just as easy as a CA if your unlucky enough to get an abused one.

Just check the state of the oil out ect.
Take the car for a test drive make sure its not blowing that supper cool blue smoke, a little bit of smoke is ok as long as its black, but lots of brown stuff under acceleration is bad.

And a compression test is always a good indicator too of how the insides of the engine are.

I have to disagree also with CA18DET's being unreliable. Keep the oil levels up and your sweet, i havent had a problem yet. Oh and dont think that just because the SR20 replaced the CA18 that it's better, Nissan actually found that the CA18 was too expensive to mass produce and so decided to replace it with the SR20 during the price wars of the early 90's. The change was not made because the engine was inferior, in fact in some aspects it is superior.

SR20 are more prone to blowing up with the basic mods (turbo, fmic, boost)over a CA18 anyday and also being alot quieter aswell, seen and heard S15 SR20 making valve noise in a 8000km engine and in one case a new head had to be used.

My CA18 has 160000km on the clock and she still not burning a bit of smoke apart from running really rich black smoke occasionally, and thats out racing twice a week, lets just say the needle hits the base of the dash :P

Oh no mine will blow up  . Improper tuning is the result of this einstein regardless of whether its cast iron or alloy. Please get your facts straight infuture.

From what i have read they are both great engines. the main advatage of the the SR20 are the fact that it is newer and that it had more capacity. CA18s have a more reliable valve system I believe, can tolerate higher than factory rpm with greater durability than SR20.

I think I also read that even though the CA block is cast iron, they are still lighter than the SR20. Not 100% sure though...

Another CA18 advantage is that they are much easier to retune the factory managementaas no daughterboard is required.

Go for an SR20 if you can afford it because the stock car WILL be faster.

But as QIK180 says a modified car is only as good as its tuning and the way it is driven in terms of when it will go bang.

Trust me... the CA18 is heavier than an SR20 :)

When I bought a spare CA18DET for parts it was rather heavy in comparison to the SR20DET we helped the guy lift into his car :P
