Hey,
has anyone heard of the SR20VE engine???? it is naturally asperated but it's meant to be pretty good!!!
my friend with a '98 Pulsar SSS with exhaust mods is going to put one in his car, hopefully.......and he recons that he will be able to beat a SR20DET 180Sx also with exhaust and airfilter etc..........does anyone know if this would be right??? he rekons that he'd win coz we get turbo lag!!!! I cant lose to him!!! grrrrrr

apparently the engine gets like 130 odd kw@fw stock standard.......dont take my word for it tho....i was hoping someone could shed some light!!!

Hey mate,

Yeah your friend is on the money, i think the motor makes on 150kw (motor.. not wheels) so yeah about 120ish at the wheels maybe standard ? There is a chick in adelaide that has already performed the conversion, was on fullboost.com a little while ago.

Not sure about turbo lag being the reason why he would win.. Id be using the argument of FWD = little traction in cars with power.. And not only that, a motor such as the VE makes peak power very high in the rev range so he is suffering power lag anyways :D

worst case, he beats you.. just pull over, turn the boost up a few pounds and kick his ass haha

yeah, the VE probably won't win, coz if you can launch well turbo lag isn't really an issue...
They're a damn nice engine from what I've heard though, and I certainly wouldn't mind sticking one in my car :)

are they any good for turbo-ifying???? and how do they differ from the DE, what does the 'V' stand for??
what boost does a stock 180 run???
what makes you be able to get better boost?? can you have too much boost?? i know u can blow shit up by doing too much boost but should you work out your limit and how can you work that out???

sorry these may be really dumb questions but i wanna get to know what i am doing and how shit fully works so i can treat my baby good!!!!!

The lady in question I think is 'Miss Nismo' from www.pulsar.org

Go to the forums and ask you what you want.

yep, the VE os for Variable cam timing, which is a fully variable system, rather than the simple system used on the SR20DE / DET on the S14 / S15..

It's closer to the VANOS system by BMW, or Toyota's VVTLi than VTEC too, as it's continuously variable.

I think having one in a Silvia would make it like a Silvia Type R!

Wouldn't be as quick as a SR20DET though. Slightly less power overall and all top end. As soon as the DET boosted the fat midrange would see it away.
