Has anybody here thought about installing a saab 9000 i/c. They can be had for under $200. Plenty of people on the UK http://www.sxoc.com/ forums are doing it. They mount the cooler just in fornt of the radiator. Not as cool as a proper fmic but a lot cheaper. Some of the guys there reckon 18 psi no problem.

Here's a site with the install pics:

click the number for the pictures, took me a while to work that out.

thanks heaps for that mate...thats an excellent site for CA18's to. So you reckon I could pick one of these up from the wreckers for $200.

talk about tightarse  I have to wonder, why bother... really. Its about an inch thick and sure in England where the outside temp is lucky to reach 15 on a scorcher, here i cant see it doing that much cooling. Im sure it would offer less pressure drop than the standard item with all the bends and crap but just save up for something decent...

*deposits his 2c* :D

The first wrecker I went to said $220 so I reckon if go back and bargain say cash price nudge nudge I'd get it under $200

Of course no where near as good as a proper fmic but ... here's my calculations:

standard core = 22 X 17 X 6 = volume of 2244

saab core = 50 X 38.5 X 3 = volume 5775

proper fmic = 40 x 30 X 7 = volume 8400

also the saab core piping will waay shorter than factory piping.

I reckon this cooler plus piping could done for under $300.00

Now the saab core will front mounted, have shorter plumbing and more than twice the volume of the stock core all this for under $300, what do you reckon ??

Sorry forgot about this thread..

Those calculations are all well and good, but realistically i cant see an 'intercooler' being so thin providing much in the way of cooling. Im sure it would still have less of a pressure drop than the standard unit just due to the simplicity of the piping. Still if you chose to spend $300 on that then go ahead, id be interested in see the real world results. The intercooler i have used on my car (same as ones im selling funnily enough  ) has reduced inlet tempertures remarkebly. The outlet side is cold to touch on a night run.. Id like to hook up a temperature gauge to it as soon as i find one around to show some actual results. I was also able to generate about 2-2.5psi more boost on the same setting just through improved flow.
