Hi I've got a s15 spec r Silvia that's hitting a rev limiter of sorts at 4-5k and the cars having trouble starting without a tap on the throttle which led me to believe it's a fuel issue but I've been told there is no issue there however I'm very skeptical. There is also a pop out the exhaust when changing gears(I've been told on a dark street a flash of light can be seen out the exhaust when it pops however if I back off the throttle before shifting there is no pop (so maybe unburnt fuel being ignited in the exhaust?). Anyone able to give me an idea of what could be causing these issues? the car is modified with aftermarket ecu, pod filter, exhaust, boost controller.
Thanks for any help :)

EFI cars should be able to start without the throttle being touched.

Cheapest and most commonly forgotten place to start diagnosis is the fuel filter. If you don't remember when that was last changed, start there and throw a new one on.

My s14 has had them problems, the exhaust pop was when i took off the recirculate valve and put BOV, and the rev limiter thing at 4-5k was spark plug gap i had i think 1mm and needed to be .8

Fuel filter should be ok but I might change it anyways
Spark plugs and gaps will be getting checked tomorrow. I've been told it could also be because of the spark coils(I think that's what they're called) maybe goin off to the side instead of straight, does that sound right? There is a after market bov that I forgot to mention so that explains the pop.
Thanks for all the help

Update: took the boost controller out so now running stock boost (12psi I think?) and it's made a huge difference, car is reving out alot easier but still doesn't seem to want to go past a certain point however it will if you continue accelerating unlike before where it wouldn't go any higher. Couldn't check the spark plugs though

get new copper plugs, set them between 0.6-0.8

and aftermarket splitfire coilpacks should be able to worry away your problems

you do have an aftermarket FMIC too right?

and you're not setting boost above 15psi yeah?

Im getting new plugs next week or the week after hopfully and fixing any gapping issue then
How much are the coil packs roughly?
I'm not sure what you mean by FMIC sorry and it's running stock boost at the moment so that's 12psi I think? Was running 15 untill recently.
Unfortunately things have come up in life and my car has pretty much had to be put on hold for atleast a couple of months :(

FMIC = Front Mounted Inter-Cooler.

Splitfire coils go for about $600 a set,but it's unlikely that you need them at this point.

As I said before, check the fuel filter. If you don't know when it was last changed,do one anyway as they're tiny and aren't a 'look at me' part,so most kids ignore them until they clog up and the car stops. You should ideally change them every 20k km or so.

First place to look when you're having breakdown issues on boost is plugs, then fuel supply.
Throw some new plugs in (NGK BKR6E are ~$4 each) and then change the fuel filter.

$10 says that will be the end of your problems.

After giving the whole car a good service and finally getting a socket that would fit the spark plugs were found to be long past their used by date, now they've been changed its running great :) just need to change the head gasket and put 4 new tyres on it and it's perfect :)
Thanks again for all the help, it was greatly appreciated!
