Hey all, While this might be abit of a stupid question i thought i'd just ask...i got a '90 model S13 and it has quite abit of work done to it but i'm looking at changing a whole bunch of things and was just wondering with the clutch if it'd be easier to switch the clutches over myself or to just take it to a workshop and let them do it so i dont mess it up

i'm gonna get a mate to help who has pulled out gearboxes before..im probably gonna get stuck on the alligning of the new clutch though which makes me think i shuld just take it to a workshop n have it done properly, but i want to try and do as many of the mods as i can myself

You can buy a clutch aligning tool from most car places (repco, supercheap etc). However, a much better option is to find someone with a gearbox input shaft. (Another, not so recommended option is to only do the pressure plate bolts up loosely, then slide the box on to line the clutch up. Then pull the box off and finish tightening the pressure plate bolts).

Either way, the job is pretty simple, but it can get really frustrating if you don't get the clutch alignment right. (Because the gearbox wont go back on).

Long story short, if you can allow a few days for the job and you want to learn a valuable skill, do it yourself. We're always here to help if you get stuck.

but if you do it yourself and stuff the clutch most places won't warrant it!!!

My advise would be get the aligning tool and spigot aswell if you do it
yourself. :D

It also depends on how bad your flywheel is. When we did the clutch in MAXBOOST's car, the clutch plate had welded itself to the flywheel, so machining wasn't really an option :)

Then again I've seen some flywheels come out without a mark on them.

As far as I know it was just a standard clutch. It may have even been the one that came with the engine from the factory. I take it he was giving it a bit of a workout when it let go?

It's good to hear it's got a proper clutch now.
