i had some 256 intake and exhaust cams put in about a month ago. My mechanic said he had to play around with the idle so i could drive it home.
It wasn't idling properly. it would hunt, its running very rich and just doesn't sound like a very happy motor.

Car is a JDM s15.
has FMIC, pod, ebc, full exhaust, cams, fuel pump

The car was stuck in the garage for a month while i was waiting for an opening at Unigroup. I dropped the car off on saturday to get a new computer and tune as it had the stock ecu and yavus is still trying to find out why this is happening.

Anyone know? i really miss the car and i am stuck riding my motorbike when it rains

Any advise would be great to try and help yavus find the cause of the problem .

I want to drive again!!!!!

That shouldn't be an issue as they are step 1 cams.
Yavus has said there have been cars with a stock ecu's with tomie step 1's that have retained the VCT that idle fine with out probs

Aww man!

I hope there isn't a major issue and he can fix it asap
Its like a part of me is missing

it had the stock ecu in there but is going to be replaced by yavus.

he just hasn't started the tuning as he is trying to find out the cause of the idle issue

why get cams with out ecu, better to get ecu first and not get cams.

so you reckon the timing chain is off?

i got the cams cheap and installed cheap so i went ahead with it.
Was going to get an ecu but didn't realise i would have to wait heaps to actually get a spot at Unigroup

The mechanic who installed the cams is very recommended. Yavus actually wants him to move closer to where he is but he wont relocate. Good thing as his workshop is very close to my house :D Unigroup is atleast 40 mins away
:(

I'll run the timing chain thing by yavus

and retune everytime you change something? smart move there.

the std ecu can deal with step 1 cams quite easily. worked fine in my last S14 for over a year. it's not map sensed, the ecu can adjust by itself for pretty much any airflow related mod you make,as long as the afm doesn't hit 5v. mixtures won't be ideal obviously, but it'll still run just fine.

you only worry about the ecu when you make changes that it won't be able to deal with, such as injectors or afm.

I'm jumping in with Ryan and Jay,the cam timing has been done incorrectly. cover off and re-check the static timing.

it's big enough for people who haven't done it before to take it to someone to do for them.

put it this way,I'm a licensed mechanic and I won't do it any more often than I have to.

yea i wuldnt try it urself, alot of damage culd be done, alot more then most mechanc's wuld charge to cheak it.... it culd be an issue with the original instaler of the cam's, in which case im not to sure if i'd be happy taking it back, however ppl make mistake's,

out of intrest, does it have any rattle noise's etc? metalic or other.

The most obvious thing to check is the cam timing. That said I have got a cam install out by one tooth before and it drove fine but was down about 20% on power.

I'd be worried about the problem being more serious - eg the cam timing being out so much that a valve has tapped a piston, or having one of the shims/rocker fall out of place in the process

Did he check the ignition timing? That catches out the best of us when doing cam swaps. Following the manual doesn't always mean it is right with setting up the CAS

There is no way i would be checking the cam timing myself! i was just asking to get a gauge on how long it would take a mechanic so i know what im going to be up for.

Im not really sure what was checked by the mechanic who installed it as i got there and he said he was fucking around with the timing so it would idle a bit better and be drivable (ran like sh!t though). Also not sure what Yavus has done as i havn't really heard from him. he called on tuesday and asked if the car was running fine prior to having the cams installed. i replied with a yes it was fine but no word since then.

There are no strange noises coming from the motor so thats good i guess...

Hope there are no serious issues with the car. Just wondering if there was....would the mechanic who installed the cams be at fault and be liable to fix?
