HPI did a review/DIY install of the aftermarket Philips HID kit in their Project S13.

They gave the product an excellent review, and at $500 or so, they aren't too pricey (think how easily you could spend that money on other stuff). After all, headlights are needed for safety too.

When I have the cash, I will certainly be getting some. In my first S13, I replaced the stock bulbs with Philips ones, and they were a slight improvement...but next time I'm definitely going HID.

They got them aimed at an autoelectricians shop too, which you would want to do to avoid blinding anyone.

they used to be. even they've caved to consumer pressure and have gone into asia in the search for lower overheads and lower quality product that wears out faster.

EXACTLY ^^^^^

i used to sell it when i was working in retail

ahhhhh back in the days

still tho, albeit china made, they are still the best and most realiable globes out there.

If you want to go cheap, but still ok with headlights, try a brand called MTEC, they are ok too

ill be installing a hi/low h4 hid into my square s13 lights, ill write it up. when i do it. i did run h3 low hids on my projectors awhile ago.

If you want to actually see at night, hid is the way to go. 6000 is the best color to get nice and white and looks a bit more oem. around 4500 - 5000k will give you the best light output but difference between 4500 - 6000 is probably about 10% in lumens.

your only other option bar hid is to clean the plastics, and install brighter lights that use similar wattage. i wouldnt recommend running a 100w globe or something like that might not be the best for your wiring.

ok i installed them this morning. they look almost oem. As mentioned previously i used a hi/low kit - kaixen h4.

In terms of tools youll need a small philips screw driver. Theres no cutting or anything like that. All the plugs only have one spot to fit so your not likely to stuff up.

I am using the AK HID -- A cable (you will know if you get the kit)

- Take the rubber moisture seal off the old lights, and give it a clean
- On the new hid bulbs unscrew the base, it will in turn take the bulb off the mount.
- insert the moisture seal onto the bulb base
- put the bulb base where you unscrewed it from.
- theres two screws on the top of the bulb take them off. Discard the front cover that it is holding. (You cant use this because the s13 healight housing is too small and you wont be able to fit it in)
- now put the bulb into the headlight housing and put on the metal clips to hold it in place.
- you will realise now why you put the moisture seal on the base of the bulb. plug on the moisture seal onto the headlights.
- and put the rest back and your done.

Ill take some pics later for you guys.

if you get higher wattage you risk damaging your headlights, phillips do some ones that come in red packs, they dont look blue but can give you 25m extra distance, installed them on the missus car, they work really well, different gasses and glass to increase the brightness instead of just upping the wattage

hid's use about 35w which is less than standard but use 20amps which is standard on a s13.

HID come in a 50watt also. not sure of the color temps, but i believe you SHOULD use the correct starter/ballast with them to cope with the additional voltage required to ignite them.
