hi All,

pretty much i have always used a 10W-40 since i have had my S15, it has always been synthetic and i prety much only have used Motul 300V however i want to try something a little different/cheaper maybe something like castrol edge or Penrite Sin, now looking at those oils the oil grads are either a 5W-30 or 10W-60 or so, is it ok to go down to a 5 weight or should i stick with the 10 weight, if so will a 10W-60 be ok?

the car is mildly modified and makes 225kw and max boost is 20psi.

10W60 is too thick for the SR. 10W40 is a good weight, I'd be sticking with that. 10W30 or 5W30 would be fine too.

The W rating isnt as important as the latter number, as it doesn't really get that cold here in Australia. Eg 10W60 is going to be a hell of a lot thicker than a 10W40 in our climates from cold start to running temps.

stability at higher temps mainly for me

I have run Mobil 1 10W-30 in my rb25 since it became readily available in 5L, I changed from their old 5W-50 which is a bit too much of a spread, truth be told.

Here's a couple of pics of the top end while i was removing the hks cams (which are about 15k old) regularly tracked and revved to 7400rpm, well over the 6850 limiter imposed by nissan.

Not a mark on the lobes (the stock cams have a blue line), the insides of the cam covers and head are immaculate and there are no marks on the wearing surfaces.

What more could you ask for?

would a 5W-30 be to thin, the car has about 100K on the engine so it ins't exactly a new engine, it is well looked after though.

5W30 isn't too thin at all (its probably the most popular grade in the USA!). If your car doesn't see extensive track work, its an ideal weight to use. For shits n giggles I use a 0W20.

I've run SIN 5 in mine for like a year now and it's been sweet. Changed every 5000ks.

I got my mates 180SX on it as well he's done 3 changes on it and said overall running has improved noticeably coming from Shell Helix Ultra 5W/40. Oil temps are much more stable with SIN 5 he's been telling me.

When I switched from motul 4100 (5w30 semi-synth) to 8100 (10w40 fully synthetic), I noticed an instant improvement in smoothness. Coming from my busted as fuck car, thats saying something!

older engines probably shouldn't use anything below a 10W40 rating. not unless you want to see your expensive oil going out the back in a cloud or pooling on your driveway.
