On behalf of a mate whos S13 (stock apart from front mount and exhaust and intake) will idle between 1500 and 800 RPM and blow too much black smoke.
It will rarely bounce around ie: it will not drop from 1500 rpm from when it is started.
Thermostat was replace, was stuck open, idle has improved slightly but not signifcantly. Had no affect on smoke situation.
Will check throttle body tomorrow.

Any advise on what to check?

sound like he could have a vacume leak some where get im to have a look his not drawing in air some place. does te car boost normaly? make sure theres no boost leak.
or pull the computer codes and see what you get the comp could be in Limp mode.

i don't think its a boost leak as it boosts fine when driving, not a 100% sure when its on idle...

Hypothetically speaking if it was a boost leak, when it's idling, would the boost gauge be constant or moving ?

Also if it helps it is a CA18DET.
