I was going through the service manual the other day as i am nearly up to my 100 k service and figured i might get that one done professionally.

I was reading the service book and it said chnage timing belt, now i know that the SR is a timing chain and i figured the book was just talking about other models as it seems to be a generic service outline for all nissans of that time.

But none of the service intervals had change timing chain. Do you need to change your timing chain. If so when?

yeah you need to change the timing chain when it breaks

then if its broken youll need to change the pistons and valves and anything else you break :P

nah the chain should be left alone doing your regular oil changes and it should be fine.

it doesn't mention it because they virtually never fail in normal service.

100k km on an S15 isn't a major service from memory. double check the book if you're not sure. all the required items will be listed.

yeah the book seems to think it is major, it says to change all oils (engine, gearbox and diff), plugs, filters, brake fluid and well timing belt.

all those things have been done within the last 15000-20000 km except the engine oil and filter which is done every 5000.

How often does everyone here do a major servce?

Sounds like you're reading the service schedule for a CA. The SR service intervals have a major service every 40,000km so the 100,000km service is just a minor.

I was in the same boat when I thought I had to change the timing chain.. but talked to a few other people with s15 and mechanics which all said to leave it until you notice it start to get more noisey (like rattle or something)

my car now at 105,000 and still going strong

I service my car every 3000kms (just replace engine oils) and every alternate 3000kms (ie. 6000kms, i do the filters and clutch/gearbox oils etc). Should I be doing anything else besides these besides general replacement of old/worn/broken items?

Car came imported from Japan with no logbooks nothing so yeah :D

Apparantly the timing chain is meant to be done at around 140,000kms....or when it starts to make a noise.

As for the 100,000km service, the big ones are...
box oil, diff oil, spark plugs, fuel filter, oil filter, oil, coolant, air filter.
Also should check/change brake pads, check brake/clutch fluid.
