I've due to change the oil and oil filter on my 1991 S13 SR20DE Silvia. I've got the same oil as the mechanic put into it when he serviced it a few months ago, but I don't know which oil filter to get as a replacement.

Has anyone replaced their oil filter themself? Can you advise me of the best one to get (Ryco?), part number, how to replace it, etc?

I don't know much about servicing a car yet, but I'd like to learn how to do the absolute basics myself.

Thanks,

Anakha

servicing is very easy.
i will be getting a filter tom from UNIQUE so i'll post the number as soon as i get it.

the oil filter on the SR is a bitch to get out.
if you can't take it of by hand then its hard to use any other tool.

there is one that connects to a ratchet, really easy but the cost like $80 bucks... good to have..

Cruise up to any worksho and they should be able to loosen it up for ya.
UNIQUE did, for me at no charge, so i was pretty happy with that...

the easy way to remove the oil filter is with a screwdriver and hammer simply puch the screwdriver into the filter and undo it but make sure you drain the oil first

I've always found that if you clean the filter and your hand, or use a rubber glove it's easy enough to undo by hand.

The Ryco part number is Z386, but I use genuine Nissan ones.

Can you describe the vehicles that you drive? Maybe there is a difference between the two cars?

Where can I source a genuine Nissan one? I rang my local Nissan dealership and they didn't have any in stock... they'd never sourced one before either :-(

where's your local Nissan dealer? It should be the same as the 200SX, or the Pulsar SSS, being SR20 engines.
Mine's an SR20DE, Shpeedie's is DET, but I'm pretty sure they're the same.
Possibly the Z442 and Z386 are the same mounting but different sized filters or something...
There are a lot of compatible models around.
I just told the Nissan dealer that I wanted an oil filter for an SR20DE...

When I changed oil filters in the past I got the impression that a few different sizes would fit as long as the mounting part was the same diameter.

Heard heaps of different part numbers quoted

Do you find it easier to change the filter from above, leaning down intot he engine, or from below (I assume that you have to remove the scrape-cover first?). I bought one of those oil filter remover tools from SuperCheap today (the handle with the adjustable strap on the end).

yeah I did it through the top, just by hand.. The normal filter wrench things won't fit in.

Make sure you put a bucket or ice cream container on the ground underneath the filter though, cos all the oil in it pours out when you undo it.

i've just removed mine.

i use genuine NISSAN $14 bucks..
SERIAL : 15208 53J00
i used this.

all other tools are useless.
its about 10 bucks from big W.

you hook it up form underneath.
theres only room to move by about 20mm but after a 2-3 goes then the filter is loose and you can just use your hands to loosen the rest.

if you don't want oil going all over the place as you remove the filter get some black garbage lastic bags and cover as much as you can.

i like to keep my engine clean :D

easy.. :D

S14 and S13 oil filters are different. S13 use a filter the same as nxcoupe... I bought a genuine S14 filter from nissan and found that there is a difference in the depth of the thread so the thread on the block wouldn't catch the thread on the filter,...

I find removing the oil filter in my SR very easy. I use a tool that attaches to a ratchet and ratchet extension. I had to modify this tool to suit, but it makes life sooo easy

also, removing the filter is pretty easy if you go to your mums kitchen .. grab a dishwashing glove and use it dry to get a good grip on the oil filter .. it gives a MUCH better grip than trying to do it by hand .. if you dont have a tool for it.
