Good question. From what I can gather, the impact point was reasonably high - through the waistline of the car, so the shock was transferred through the chassis rather than an impact down near the wheels which would have sent a shock through all the suspension components.

I don't know the proper name for it, but the mating surface where the diff output meets the half shafts (usually flat) has been smashed pretty hard from side on and has massive raised sections in it on both sides. It's as if the chassis and diff have tried to move laterally and everything else has stayed put, if that makes sense? That force has to go somewhere, so I dare say the lateral force will have buggered something in the hub too.

We might find that the arms are bent when we go to install them in the straight shell, but visually, they look pretty good!

Unfortunately,it doesn't work that way. If you have a decent amount of rego left on the damaged car you'd want to cancel the rego asap and get a refund of the balance.
the new shell will be a new registration once it's blue slipped,so it'll get new plates and you start with 6mths or a year's rego depending on which option you ask for at the time you put the paperwork through.
you MAY be able to put your current plates into storage and then have them re-issued to go onto the new shell if you wanted to keep that particular combination, but if they're nothing special, just take whatever they give you when you do the new rego.

So I take it there's no point cancelling the rego then re-applying for it on the new car if I can just transfer the rego to the shell once it's blue slipped?

Yeah, check the welds on the arms and things like that pretty carefully, sounds like there was lots of force going lots of places!
You may not be able to tell visuall which components have taken damage or not in some cases too.

Carefull with what you re-use suspension wise!

Agreed! We shall see.

Thanks for the details fergo, clears things up a lot. Will get on the rego bit ASAP. Don't care what the plates are, so will return those while i'm at it.

A few pics of the aftermath...

From these pics it looks more like a graze, but there's some serious gaps in places there shouldn't be, and a couple of pinches around the b pillar on the other side.

A photo of the half shaft surface I was talking about...

yep that's a goner.

half shaft will probably still work, but I'd replace it.

I have a few spares if you need one.

Damn that must be disheartning Leif. Good luck with getting back out there sometime soon.

yeah, that driveshaft just looks to have been forced inwards by the impact. You can see the outline of the CV in the plate.

Throw the shaft out preferably. diff will be fine at least.

If the impact has left kinks on the other side of the shell then yeah, it's transferred through. There's a fair chance you'll find ripple in the floor as you start stripping it.

Ohh definitely broken good....
Looking at the pics there are a few parts that I might want from that car though, not to be a vulture or anything but some of door window surrounds and whatnot which are in crap condition on my car....

Sorry to hear this, paying the price is never the fun part of this game.

Good to see you aren't letting it get you down or break your spirit :) Good luck with the reshell, don't give up on it!

Thanks mate. Yeah I couldn't let it sit there too long as it was - it was getting me down. Time to move on.

Crashed shell is now completely stripped, so getting there...

Update!

I decided that for a number of reasons, it was best to leave the re-shell to the professionals. Main reasons: lack of skill, lack of space, lack of tools, and time. It's also my daily, so I didn't want to be without a car for a year or more (which i'm sure it would have taken if i'd been involved).

So once the car was completely stripped (this was late May), it was left with Autosport. We discovered that I also had a knackered turbo, so I started searching for a used disco/2871. Didn't have a lot of luck, so ordered a new GT2871R 48t 0.64 rear housing.

I was on holiday from 1st July till last week, so there's been no rush, but the car is now pretty much fully assembled, and is going to Unigroup on the 2nd September for a tune. Really looking forward to having it back.

Pics to come.

Nice turbo choice. I have the same one on my track car.

You could see up to 240rwkw with fullboost around 3500 (Provided you have cams and other support stuff)

Cheers. I read a few of the old turbo discussion threads (and your track car build), and the turbo sounded pretty good for my intended use.

The engine has a set of step one cams (can't remember the exact specs). so hopefully can be tuned to produce some strong boost early like you've mentioned.

I noticed before the accident that the injector duty cycle could get quite high on the track - sometimes around 85%. Do you think the 550cc injectors might be a limiting factor here?

I didn't think your car had 550's in it. I thought they were stockers or 480s max.

If you are hitting 85% duty cycle with your gt28r, you are going to have even more issues with the 2871
