So i picked up my new track car today. It should be familiar to a lot of the old regulars here. For those who don't know the car, this is dumhed's old NA s13 track car.

Image

Image

Current specs as bought (as far as i know):
S14 SR20DE
Some form of uber crackable extractors and 3 inch stainless exhaust
280 degree cams with decent lift and valve springs
S15 power FC
S15 6 speed gearbox
Super single clutch
S15 torsen diff in s13 housing with 4.4s
S13 manual steering rack
caster rods
s14 LCA's
S15 shock with aftermarket springs and camber top front
Bilstein shock and aftermarket springs rear
r32 GTR brakes front with Hawk pads
OZ Racing 17x8.5 wheels all round
Lots of weight reduction

Image

Short term plans:

get some new semis
Install my momo seat and omp wheel
drive

Not so short term plans:

Further weight reduction. Front and rear reo are still in the car so they can go. I also have a lightweight boot which can be installed anytime.
My Nismo 1.5 way will be installed.
Custom dash including my pivot tacho, VDO water and oil temp and oil pressure gauges along with a HKS chrono boost gauge (does this give too big a hint?)
Front and rear flares (because wide guards are for poofs)
see what suspension bushes can be salvaged from the r32 and install them
Install the R34 GTT front callipers and pmu scr pro rotors

Long term plans:

Full rewire
even more weight reduction inc removal of stock tank and spare wheel well and replace with fuel cell in the boot
Maybe better shocks and slightly stiffer front springs (to suit)
s15 SR20DET with cams, ex gate and 3071....

Nice project mate. Don't want a neo RB25DET for it do you?

Any particular reason you are considering a fuel cell? you're not likely going to save more than a kg or two over the std setup. a fuell cell will be smaller,so you'll lose range, and proper, legal fitment of a fuel cell will mean some custom fabrication for mounts, covers to separate it from the inisde of the cabin, and new lines and an external pump to link up to the engine.

if the std tank has surging issues, fitting a surge tank and an external pump would quickly solve the problem without resorting to an expensive custom fuel system.

Bans for anyone suggesting rb's in s13's....plus i already have a 25, cams and turbo sitting in the garage :)

weight mainly.

The removal of the tank is only half of it. The removal of the metal in the boot floor is the other half. Replace it with a sheet of 2mm aluminium and a couple of bits of angle and it's done

A 19 litre cell should do me a couple of sessions, and i already have a surge tank and 044 out of the r32 if needed.

It may never happen but it's something i'm thinking about. I may not do it as i don't want to remove too much weight from the rear.

Yeah, i know about the rear fire wall requirements. I have thought about that too :)

fair enough. both tanks are plastic though, and running the std tank half full is going to be close enough to the same as far as weight goes.

there's nothing stopping you cutting the boot floor out and replacing it with ally,so you'll shed a couple of kg there, but as you said, your main problem will be weight up front more than the rear. problem being that it's much harder to get weight out of the front than the back...

Are s13 tanks plastic? I've had a tank out of a 180 years ago and i was sure it was steel.

Dumhed has had the car out recently. I think it's last outing was a couple of months ago. Time for a new project.

Ah,ok. must just be S14 onwards then that are plastic. my bad.

yeah, you'll save a few kg with the fuel cell in that case. trying to get lighter materials (ally or carbon) into the front of the car would be a good idea as well,as that's where all the weight is,even if you're not using an RB.

if you're getting really serious about weight,I guess you'll be fitting poly windows, frp or carbon front panels (there are a LOT of carbon panels on US ebay including stuff like door trims, bootlids, side skirts etc), swapping in aluminium bolts where possible, trimming the wiring loom of all non-essentials,drilling strategic holes,etc...

yeah, there's plenty of silly weight reduction on the cards.

Battery is already relocated, wiring loom will be getting some attention, bonnet is already pretty light weight.

Pulling weight out of the doors is a consideration but i wouldn't do it without a cage with side impact protection.
