Ok, it's been diagnosed my 400D has some significant dust on the sensor. Its just becoming an issue since I've started to really do some HDR photography with very small aperture settings...

So question is, has anyone successfully cleaned their digital camera sensor themselves? or should it be a send back to cannon job?

It's a bit frustrating because I've probably only had the lens off this camera a couple of times in its life... ARGH...

check out this pic for the evidence - http://media.share.ovi.com/m1/original/ ... 15bee5.jpg

thanks,
-Dan

yeah mine had the same problem. take it to a reputable camera place and they will clean out the camera.

that sensor cleaner thats built in im not sure how good it actually is.

its not a huge deal. but dust gets in there every time you switch lenses

just use a clone tool to get rid of the spots. i did it on my OS trip pics and they turned out real good!!

Cool - i was just about to consider purchasing the following...

Do you reckon this shouldn't be a "at home job" ?

I'll call around some of the local photographic places... let me know if you have a recommendation. (I was hoping not to need to send it away etc)

i wouldnt bother trying myself, but thats me. id rather not accidently bump something and do damage. if they do it, thats their problem and they will fix it.

plus they have experience too!

don't clean it yourself mate, you can scratch the sensor if you dont do it properly, particularly using them brushes for DIY cleaning.
i work at olympus and ive seen people try to DIY clean themselves and then scratch it. pay someone to get it done properly.

the rocket air thing works, the techs here use them but depending how stubburn the dust is, it may not take it all off

otherwise, do what iain said, just photoshop the spots out :)

Thanks Whyte,

Can you recommend any shops in the Sydney area that I can take the camera to?

I rang Ted's yesterday and they were not exactly helpful.

I rather take it somewhere then send it to Canon via mail etc...

There seems to be a fair bit of stuff showing up in photos, photoshop will work, but a bit of a pain in the arse. They are also appearing at around f11 (rather then f16 and smaller as most websites seem to indicate) - so I do want to get it fixed properly.

yeh teds suck! try camerahouse or paxtons. ive found them 2 companies to be the most helpful when non warranty shiet needs to be done (even under warranty theyre mighty helpful) for a general clean its approx $100 & under to get it done.

if you're near canon, just drive up and drop it off personally.

heres what google came up with, now take your pick.

Thanks guys, I'll check em out. There is one in Chatswood which is close enough to me.

BTW - i'm assuming that dust on the sensor is not covered by warranty... (I think my camera is over 12 months old now anyway...)

LOL.

So is it a fact of life, digital camera sensors are going to get dust on them ? (at some stage in their life?)

Be as careful as you may, it's just not possible to always prevent dust getting in there - especially as this dust is practically microscopic...

yup! every time you remove your lens, dust will get in there!

try to hold the camera upside down when you change the lens, dust doesnt often drop upwards, unless there is wind......
