Wish i could afford the 2.8

Im still at uni so once i get a full time job another L lens will be my first purchase :)

But overall im really happy with the f4. Very sharp, good contrast and lovely colours..

Here are a few shots i took the other day at wakefield.

This was my first time using the lens and my first attempt at panning.

Hope you like it.

they arent really boring, and for a first time with the lens thats a pretty good effort!

+1 on pic 3!!

holding a 2.5+kg camera while panning isnt exactly easy. and by the end of the day youre tired as hell.

was the lotus braking or is that how he has it setup for the track??

I guess it was my first attempt at panning and all.. So im happy with the results..

Im sure some photos are boring.. But to be honest Wakefield is damn boring place.. The backgrounds are just all dead brown grass.

Also you cant take pics in the middle of the track (where the officals do)..

The only spots are up the hill so you are taking pics looking down at the cars..

In regards to the the lotus.. It was braking hard!!

Here is another pic for ya.. I do have one with the whole car in it, but i dont think i have uploaded it.

looks like a pretty good effort to me. Well the content of the pics are not all that exciting, but looks like the technique is working well...

The last one would be great composition if the two blokes where not in the frame...

In the end financial pragmatism won out over my desire for the biggest and best toys. After copious amounts of research, I've come to the conclusion that if you ever decide to upgrade to a different type of camera, be it Nikon vs Canon, or DX vs FX, it is a rite of passage to have to sell most of your old gear and invest in new equipment.

SO I am now the proud owner of:
Nikon D90
I got the 18-105VR lens included in the deal. It seemed a better lense than what came in the twin pack, although I did want the 18-200 :(
SB600 speedlight
67mm Hoya UV filter (thanks to you guys for suggesting getting a filter as 'insurance')
AF 50mm 1.8D lens - the guy took a great shot of Kerri-Anne and I with it, so I had to get it :)
2 x 8GB SD cards - I got sucked in and let the sales guy talk me in to getting the class 6 cards @ $160 each rather than the cheap $40 models.
We also got a case and a monopod.

Now I just have to get out and take some pics! Thankfully I'm in the middle of installing some door trims and seats, so I'm thinking of taking some pics as I do it.

Yeah, it is a nice feature to have, although I'll still use the Handycam for when the purpose is video only.

i think its going to keep the prices of DSLRs up too high as they add this feature to them. personally, i think a DSLR is a still camera only, and a video camera is exactly that. they shouldnt cross over.....

What sort or lense would you guys recommend for static car shots - for interiors and the like.

something like a 50mm F1.4 prime lense. you can go big apertures and do some funky stuff. also when youre not using it for car stuff, its a good portrait lens.

Unfortunately I have to agree. At the moment it seems more like a gimmicky feature to justify the high price tag. I've got a 3CCD video camera that's a few years old and doesn't output in high def, but the footage you get out of it stomps all over everything I've seen out of the D90.

Don't get me wrong - it's nice to have video as an option, but it definitely shouldn't be something influences your decision about which DLSR to buy.

Well it depends.

If you do wedding photography, or you are a 2nd shooter, it will deff come in handy.

But yea both should not be mixed, but if you can why not :)

Actually there was a time when i wish i had a 5dk2 or something which could take video. Was at a local track day and my friend wanted me to capture him drifting. So i took pictures which turned out great, but if i had video capability it could have been even better.

But each to their own i guess..

its a waste of card too, the videos are massive!

and i rekon the amount of video youd take on a DSLR would be probably less than 1% of the total use of the camera.

there is a member on here that owns a 5dmk2, outdrifting, i wonder how much video he took on his last trip?? :P
