ok get either canon or nikon. olympus make toys. i think sony are trying to get into the market BIG TIME after buying minolta cameras and sticking their branding all over them.

you CAN just buy macro extension tubes for standard lenses, they work, but you lose 1 or 2 stops. but you can still take pics if you cant afford a macro lens.

RAW format is easier to adjust than JPG. JPG is good if youre putting pics on ebay. i use lightroom to adjust pics and it eats up RAW!

remember with night shots higher ISOs dont mean shit. you do long exposures at the lowest possible ISO your camera will do, some people think the opposite. FPS on a consumer DSLR will be around 3 per second. prosumer DSLRs around 6 and pro DSLRs can do up to 12 or more. so consider that when you look into a camera

my 400D does 3.2 frames per second. i found that wasnt fast enough for me at drift days. not to mention that i suck at taking pics of cars on a track lol

I buy most of my photographic stuff from http://www.d-d-photographics.com/ (mainly because they have a pickup location in North Sydney where I can just walk in - and avoid delivery charges)

Either the Canon or Nikon will suit your needs, it really comes down to personal preference... ie if you like the button layout, LCD screen and menus system.

Shooting in RAW is useful if you expect to do some advanced post processing - if you're just shooting for the web, or for family pics - jpeg is fine.

How did you like the Nikon D700 Zei?

DD were very cheap about 6 months ago, gotten rather expensive with the jump in the exchange rates tho :( my mate also buys most of his stuff from there :D

yeah agreed... they were quite a bit cheaper then most not that long ago. I think the exchange rate has hit them a bit + they have also rented out a shop front now... they are still pretty competitive, and convenient. (since I live in North Sydney LOL :-) :-) )

i never thought id say this, but i actually liked using the nikon. bad point, it was a bit heavy, and if i put on a battery grip - pfft as if i wont - then it will be a little heavier again!

and then with the 70-200 it will be worse

that said, my wife picked it up and used it to take pics with no problems.

price wise its cheaper. i found the controls easy once i was used to their locations. the screen is massive, can display camera info on it like my 400D, as well as the LCD on top.

i dunno im kinda torn. id love the canon, but i think id be better off with the nikon.

try www.cameras.net.au. its a place in drummoyne, cheap prices been there for ages so they arent going anywhere.

Awesome - thanks for your advice guys.

Is lightroom readily available or am I better off buying it?

depends what you mean by readily available

i use lightroom 2, very featureful and easy to use and then edit with photoshop cs3 along side that :P

I just bought myself a xmas pressy yesterday. A Canon 450D Twin IS lens blah blah blah. I have no idea what anything means but i'm learning slowly.

Here and there I take some amazing pics, and then I have some really bad ones.

There are sooooooooooo many settings, how do you keep track of what to adjust and what not to?

Anyways, a really good camera :)

I bought that kit from JB HiFi on Thursday. For $1210 it is good value.

I figured it is time to retire my trusty old 35mm and get a proper DSLR.

It is a 20 year old Nikon. At the moment it is in Sydney and I'm in Melbourne and I can't remember the model.

As far as the new Canon is concerned, I think I need to RTFM. All sorts of new buttons, settings and modes to learn.
