Just a warning for those of you who frequent the trip to Wollongong from Syd, they have installed a new speed camera 1/2 way down Mt Ousley, just where it merges from 3 to 2 lanes and after the stopping pay where police often sit waiting for speeders.

The one at the bottom of the hill is well known (now moved back further) but IMO absolute wankers for putting it in this position, as their is always trucks in the left lane who merge to the middle, causing everyone to jump to the right or have to slam on the brakes and be stuck behind the trucks doing 10-20km/h (and causing more danger by pulling back into the right randomly to get around)

I didn't see any warning signs as I was passing 3 trucks just at this section, and was confronted with the camera when it was about 3-4m ahead of me, so no idea if I got done, i wasnt speeding but I might have been a few k's over as I was paying attention to seeing if anyone was inbetween the trucks and about to pull out, not my speedo..

Are you sure it was a speed camera? I think the RTA have cameras there to spy on the trucks going down ousley.

Theres the traffic monitoring cameras, then about 100m past them, theres the speed camera.

When I went down last week, there was just the two poles for the camera+sensor (its radar, not induction loop), but not operational yet.

As long as theres no cameras on mac pass, we're alright
(and if there was, im sure someone would destroy it every night)

Im pretty sure its a new speed camera. DOnt think its up and running, but it will deff catch a lot of people.

Btw i think it also takes shots going the other way. Have a look at the angel of the camera. It doesn't even point at on coming traffic.. Its weird.. you gotta see it first..

I'm surprised you guys haven't worked it out yet.

It's a Noise Camera for detecting trucks using the Engine braking.

From the Illawarra Mercury
Quote:
It may look like a speed camera and it may take photographs like a speed camera, but it's not a speed camera.

The boxy camera installed on Mt Ousley Rd last week has been set up to catch out the noisy, vibrating "bark" caused by trucks' engine brakes.

The noise detection camera is part of a trial of new equipment set to test whether trucks are adhering to the approved national engine brake noise standard, established by the the RTA and the National Transport Commission in August last year.

"Noise from engine compression brakes is a particular source of concern and complaint for many NSW residents," an RTA spokesman said.

"The RTA has been working with the National Transport Commission to help develop a standard for in-service engine brake noise. A national standard has been approved for use."

The loud bark, which is not measured in decibels, but algorithms, is caused by engine brakes on heavy vehicles fitted with worn, defective or inferior mufflers.

When the Mercury visited the site of the noise detection camera, on the southbound bend just before the New Mt Pleasant Rd overpass, it heard one in five trucks using compression brakes, despite signs warning truck-drivers to limit their use.

The RTA said trucks caught not adhering to the national standard would be warned, but not penalised.

"Operators detected exceeding the standard are sent a letter advising that they take appropriate action to modify their behaviour or the vehicle," the RTA spokesman said

Probably. I reckon its dB triggered.

At the 'mo its just warnings not fines or anything.

but....it suggests the RTA may start putting up similar devices all over the place....
