Heya,

My street finally has ADSL 2+ so I'm going to upgrade my modem so I can run wireless to the PS3/ Computer. I've done some research but get all sorts of conflicting information.

All I really want is something reliable which won't fuck up or have any drop outs due to interference from PS3 controllers, microwaves etc-. Ive read that some will drop out once the controllers are turned on.

I dont really need 802.11n as I will be using the PS3 as wireless and run a ethernet cable to the computer. The GF might be getting a laptop soon as well so a 802.11g USB will suffice.

Anyone have any recommendations from REAL WORLD experience?

I want to get a ADSL 2+ modem with inbuilt wireless as I dont want to run a seperate modem and wireless router. Also want to spend <$170

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

all 802.11 frequencies (except a and y) work in the 2.4gig band so youll get interference from pretty much anything in this frequency. ie, cordless phones (i bought a 5gig one for this reason) and bluetooth and so on.

just keep your microwave away from the PS3 and the wireless router, i have never had a problem with this before, even when the microwave was between the router and the device connected to it.

ive had a netgear wireless router with built in modem for almost 2 years. hasnt missed a beat. before that i had an SMC one that is still alive at my mums place.

just buy a decent major brand and youll be ok. steer clear of dlink and the lower grade belkin stuff.

also, mount the wireless router up as high as possible, like on the top of a book shelf, youll get better range that way. also try not putting it directly next to a wall (if possible)

just so you know i can have my PS3 and XB360 all running wirelessly with 2 laptops in the same room and not one bit of interference or 'drop-outs'

Sweet, I was thinking a netgear DG834PN, but apparently this model is incompatible with the PS3, something to do with drop outs once the wireless controllers start working. What model did you use?

thats the exact model i have lol

whoever told you it didnt work is full of shit. ill show you it working!

then again i have the latest firmware from netgear (normal download page) so maybe it wasnt available when they did the test?

i dont know how a BT controller can affect an 802.11 signal. from memory i dont use the normal chanel 6 either. i think i use 9 or 10. too many wifi APs around my area. but i like the free ones :P

Yeah that’s what I thought, I just wasn’t too sure due to some people saying it works some say not, I was really keen on that router though, BTW can you still use the media server funtion on the PS3 with that modem, some say you need to disable the function for it to work but I would like to use this function on mine.

the router doesnt affect what is on the network. both my xbox and ps3 talk to my home server perfectly fine.

mind you, streaming video over wifi isnt as good as using a wired network. it gets choppy sometimes.

Thanks for the info mate, I only have 700mb AVI/MPG videos so they should stream ok, I'll pick up the Netgear ASAP so I can start getting on-line with GT5P. Made a race cage/frame on the weekend so just need to get used to the G25 and stop spinning out.

make sure the correct WPA password is being used on the PS3 :P

other than that, what are the steps you are doing to get a problem? what IS the problem? do you have any other wireless devices working fine? how are they configured?

It was a while ago when I tried it, I'll try again and let you know the exact problem, and I dont have any other wireless devices connected to it.
