MS virtual Server is free, it is a great tool, just make sure you got alot of memory on your computer if you want to create a Virtual LAN. you will also need Serial codes for products you try to install.

For your 2k3 server put it on a domian and get use to using Active directory users and computers, install DHCP, DNS, and WSUS once you know how to use all those things plus the basics like print servers and disks you should be able to pass the 70-290. Make sure you also know group Policy and NTFS permisisons.

Zei very familiar with VM Ware we use it here at my work : )

Marshy we use windows 2000 server at work so a fair few things mentioned above i am fairly confident with but yer will defintely touch base on all that you have mentioned :D

Virtual PC sucks eggs....

When i did my MCSE i found a "legitimate" copy of VMWare Server and found it ran circles around Microsofts dodgy virtual platform.

I did Exchange subjects for my complusory electives, that way once i had done all of the exams required for the MCSE it was only one more exam to get the +Messaging - well worth it.

Good Luck.

hey i was speaking to my boss and he was saying that it is better you wait because they are going to scrap 2003 and replace it with 2008server..

his says if you do MCSE you will be doing the old one and then once 2008 comes out the course will change

That’s not true... the 2003 MCSE certification will be phase out a fair way after 2008 server has been released. The MCSE 2000 exams for instance were only phased out this year. At the current moment in time any qualifications you get from Microsoft do not expire when the exams are phased out, so even though the exams are not offered anymore your still a certified MCSE on 2000 (Microsoft might change their minds one day though).

Companies will also be slow on the uptake of server 2008 due to the licensing costs (among other things), so having a certification in a technology that not many people will utilise for a few years (at least) would be sort of pointless.

If you get your MCSE 2003, the upgrade path to the 2008 certification is only 1 exam to achieve the MCTS certification and 3 exams to achieve the MCITP certification.

i agree with Lucius, 2003 is the way to go it will take businesses ages to go to 08 espicially with Microsoft's track record with bringing out new OS's when it comes to most medium to large organisations they wont touch a new OS till they atleast bring out a service pack. Look at Vista that hasnt really gone well at all for companies. If server 98 is anything like vista nad chews up as much resources i dont see much hope for it.

Stick with 03 for now and yeah its only 1 exam to upgrade to 98 so when the market accepts 08 it will be easy to upgrade.
