It would have been the largest aperture setting I could use to keep the exposure to somewhere between 10-20 seconds... I don't have the original with me so I can't check the metadata... Very hard to use a small aperture at night, even though small aperture gives better depth of field... requires to long exposure ie much more then 30 seconds. I guess you ment smallest fstop.

Mr-Silvia you can check out the gallery at http://share.ovi.com/channel/Chanboy.SydneyNight

and no, I do not give out the high res versions.

i rekon thats the problem then

for scenes you use the smallest (largest number) aperture possible that your lens can do. the entire photo will be in focus, i rekon the 'background' area is out of focus, but its hard to tell with a small photo. that said, its still a fantastic photo!!!

use the tripod to your advantage, its stable for a reason, and 30+ second exposures are not uncommon, especially at night.

Chanboy: wow those are really small pics :P

hehe i've had my EOS 300d with just a 18-55mm kit lens since the last dyno night bought it second hand to get started, just waiting on some filters and deciding on some lenses at the moment, takes a bit of getting used to but its getting there pretty good

i used to use a fuji S7000 most of the time...all those pics are on http://www.hilariousmotorsport.com/photos (none are photoshopped)

and my new ones with the SLR are on my flikr http://flickr.com/photos/oricle/ (none photoshopped, just bordered)

I've checked out your photos before Oracle - some are really excellent, great motorsport photos. I haven't made a big attempt at motorsport shot yet... would like to get a better telephoto lens so I can do some good motion blur effects on moving cars etc...

To be honest, I lost my photo mojo for a while, and haven't been getting into it really at all this year... need some inspiration.

Zei, the problem with really long exposures on the harbour, is that there are always things moving - tree branches from the wind, sailing boat masts - the waves on the water. Two problems come up. 1) the trees, boats look really soft focus because of the movement, 2) the water looks totally dead flat. (and unusually white because you're capturing all the light reflection of the waves and loosing all the dark spots)

BTW - isn't 30 seconds the longest exposure the 400d can do - without switching to bulb (ie shutter open for as long as you hold it open with the trigger?) If you can program longer then 30 seconds - pls let me know how, cause I haven't been able to figure it out.

put the latest firmware into the camera v1.1.1 and it will allow up to 1 min exposures (i think)

when you use bulb setting the timer appears on the screen so you dont need to time exposures by watch

yeah the water will look flat, but to get a decent photo youll need the exposure time, i guess its a compromise to get what you want :)

small items can be photoshopped out, so can blurrs etc.

i have photos where i have walked into the picture during the exposure and i didnt appear in the image.

ah - i'll have to look into the firmware upgrade - was just thinking about that the other day, but decided, don't fix something that ain't broken.

The Melbourne shots are very nice!

Oricle - yeah there are some largish pics there... but I've applied maximum jpg compression to them so in reality a lot of the original detail is not there. You can see the compression artifacts in most of them.

on a different note - the 450d is released now, damn mine's already been superceeded. Its gone back to SD memory too!

Hey Zei, went looking for the firmware upgrade for 400d. Found it, but couldn't find a listing of the fixes/changes - specifically about the extended shutter timing... could you link me up? (if you know where to find that info?)

yeah exactly identically like that - but it doesn't say about the shutter speed changes... thats why I was hoping you could show me. (perhaps its an undocumented feature??)
