Dear all,

Just bought a nikon d40 camera off ebay at a bargain price. Was wondering if anyone have any exp photographing cars and whats the best way to take pics. Any info will be great.

O yeah the lens is 18-55, so will this do or would I need something else? Also, planning on taking pics of cars that is stationary.

- Turn IS OFF if you using a tripod
- Take any UV filters off
- Have mirror lock up
- Have a sturdy tripod
- Do everything in manual mode - and keep practising till you get it perfect.
- Always shoot in RAW!!!

NOTHING wrong with the 18-55 stock kit lens!! Its an excellent lens

Heres a pic with my 18-55lens: using different exposures - no editing at all
linked removed

Start with about f/8 and go from there (at nite that is)

Have a read of those online guides to taking photographys.. Best place to start..

EDIT: thought i post the pic in the thread:

you know you only need mirror lock when you have a MASSIVE lens on it. if youre using anything under 300mm you wont notice any difference.

why would you remove the UV filter for nighttime shooting? there are no UV rays from the sun at night. so its really pointless. why trouble yourself with that??

shoot in raw if you are going to play with images, if not JPG is fine for party shots. besides the fact that a raw file could be 10 megs in size compared to a 3.8meg JPG

Thats true. Mostly for those telephoto lens where vibration is an issue. Dont know why i mentioned use mirror lock up on just a 18-55mm lens..

Coz you dont need it at night time. Takes 2 secs to remove. I found my images to be better when taking the uv lens out when shooting at night time.. But each to there own..

I should have perhaps said, shoot in RAW if you have photoshop then..

Once again each to their own.. 16bit or 8bit.. Like you said, if you gonna process the images, then shoot in raw!!

yep i need to do some more tests with IS switched off... funny thing is, I have taken some excellent shots with IS on - its a bit hit and miss.

I think this is a fantastic shot - but it does have a "softness" to it, possibly could be caused by jpg compression...

FYI - Jin - you can easily take shots like this with your Nikon, just have patience and practice.

Lovely pic :)

What lens and settings were used for this shot?

Any processing involved?
